Enfield scope base?
« on: February 25, 2004, 04:08:08 PM »
I have an Enfield No.4 Mk I ( I think) in the shop that needs a scope base. I have never fooled with this type of rifle and it looks like there is little room for a scope base. I found a base in Gun Parts Inc. for about $42.00 but it didn't say if it required drilling and tapping or not. Is there a commonly used base for these rifles that works well?  Thanks for any help.   greer

Weaver make a cheap base that goes on the No4 but requires drill and tap.  Advanced Technology makes one that goes on without drilling and tapping.  I just put one on and they seem very solid.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY .303 ENFIELD SCOPE MOUNT
Extremely stable mount holds zero. T-6 aluminum. Black anodized finish. Install using weaver type rings. No gunsmithing required. CANNOT be modified to fit .308. Mfg. Lifetime Warranty.

greer:  I have one of the no-gunsmithing mounts on my WWII/1942 production #4 Mk1 and it is rock solid.  Only one trick with those is securing the holding screws toward the front of the base- toward the front of the base is a threaded hole into which go two threaded hex hed screws.  One positions the base against the inside of the action at the loading bridge and the other secures the first one in place.  I found that if I did not mark or make a bit of an indent where the securing screw butted against the action, under recoil the entire base and scope together would ride up.  To prevent that I simply took a small drill bit that fit into the threaded hole and made enough of an indent in the action so the securing screw bottomed out in that indent - no more movement and after a bucha rounds she is still right on.  Oh, BTW, the metal on those action sis soft enough to allow you to probably do with your hand and not use a drill.  Worked very well for me.  HTH.  Mikey.
