Ruger Acusport SS 5.5" Bisley
« on: December 22, 2003, 02:46:27 PM »
Folks: I just got one 2 weeks ago in .44 Magnum.  I understand that they've also produced 'em in .45 Colt and currently in .41 Magnum.  Do other shooters like theirs as much as I like mine, which is a whole lot?  I understand Acusport is planning to also do special editions in .357 Magnum and .22 LR.  These are both of great interest to me.  Do they appeal to some of you?  Thanks, Dennis

The only way you'll get one in .480 is to have it made yourself. Ruger just ain't gonna produce a five shot and that's all it could be. Stupid of them but just the way they are. I think I'd like one of those myself.

Mine isn't SS but I sure do love it. (Case hardened finish {a.k.a., acid wash}, ivory grips - simple, but pretty.)

I like my 5.5" in SS .41........tho I'm fighting the grip some. After playing around bending the "arms" on the spring, I have the trigger to a decent pull, tho it's just a touch creepy, but not enough to throw ya off.

In doing a 'poor man's trigger job' you don't bend the arms on the springs, you simply unhitch one of the two arms.  Dennis

I really like my 5.5" 45 Colt, I've shot it more than my Blackhawk and I've had that one for years. A 357 version is interesting, and I'd like to have one but I doubt I'll spend the money for it. I'm with Lloyd, a 480 version would be great. I called Ruger and suggested it, supposedly that gets it on a list of things discussed at their monthly meetings maybe if enough people call they'll decide 5 shooters aren't so bad after all.

Just spend the $15 +/- and get a Wolff spring kit.  all my SAs have a set and make for much a better feel.

JohnK:

Unfortunately, I don't think the Ruger Co. listens to anybody. People have wanted a SA .480 since the caliber was invented, but Ruger doesn't seem to care. A .480 Bisley would be a great hunting piece, but they seem to be content with making the DA version only, and we have to go to folks like Gary Reeder, et al., to make us oneĀ—using a Ruger frame of course.

A SA .480 would be cheaper than the DA .480 and they wouldn't make as much money I guess.

Oh well. :cb2:

I was just thinking some more about this Griz, does anyone know who at Ruger is so dead set against 5 shot single actions? The strength of their frame certainly isn't an issue, Linebaugh, Bowen, Reeder, Clements and others have proven that for many years. Was Bill Ruger the one who was against it? No disrespect intended but if so maybe now that he's passed we'll see something like these from Ruger.

We can keep hoping if nothing else. :)

I think alot of it has to do with the fact that ruger doesnt want to cut into the living the custom guys are making converting them. Face it if they made one for $500 it would put alot of good gunsmiths out of bussiness.

That's certainly possible Lloyd, but I think Ruger has more of a duty to their customers than their competition. How many thousands of people would be overjoyed to see 5 shot factory Rugers vs the handful of custom gunsmiths who might lose business?

Freedom Arms selling 5 shots for $1000-1500 didn't  put the custom smiths who sell for $2,000+ with year(s) long waiting periods out of business. I would bet that the people who spend thousands and wait months or years for a Linebaugh/Reeder/Clements/Bowen are still going to do so even if Ruger came out with a 5 shooter, and a huge percentage of the people who would buy the factory gun would never spend the money for a custom gun.

But that's all conjecture until or unless Ruger actually does it and is getting the thread a long ways from the original question about the 5.5" Bisleys.

Ruger 5-shot
« Reply #13 on: February 10, 2004, 11:34:20 AM »
I don't think ruger has any fundamental objections to producing a 5-shot single action revolver....

I read in gun tests last month that the 32mag single six vaquero is a 5-shot from the factory.

According to Ruger the 32 Mag Single Six is a 6 shooter. http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=6512&return=Y
The photo and exploded drawings are of a 6 round gun too.

Ruger does have the 5 shot SP101, so it's not that they're totally against the idea, they just don't seem to do it in anything larger, at least not yet.

That's very interesting.. ... I'll need to follow up wiht the GunTests guys and see if they made a mistake.    Oddly, they didn't just call it a 5-shot in the specification illustration, they made a reference to it in the review...

Did anyone else see this?

Did I understand you correctly..there is a current accusport in .41mag? Is there a url to check what current accusport versions are available? Or just check rugers site?

the single six .32 is a 6 shot. the .41 accusports are out there check on Gunsamerica.com for one. The FA guns are at least in my opinion a custom gun. You have the choice of many options when you order one and you do order them only difference is that they employ quite a few people instead of being made in a shop like linebaughs or Clemments that do the work themselves. Reader is like FA he has a few more people employed and his waiting times are less but there still custom guns in my opinion. I may get stomped for this but I take alot of pride in my clemments and linebaugh guns. I dont make alot of money im just a lineman for the power co. I scrimp and save to pay for them. They have one thing a stock ruger doesnt. They have soul! The feeling you get when it finally arrives after waiting for it to be built is something that only someone else that has one can attest to. You know that a craftsman has spent many hours making that gun right just for you. Some of the SA that ruger produces would make me nervous if they were in a .475 or .500 those cal. put a beating on a gun and need the gun to be fitted properly. Now you will say that the .480 isnt near as bad. But honestly dont you think that Rugger knows the first thing your going to do with that gun is have it rechambered for .475 and load the hell out of it. A couple of idiots overloading them and soon someone blows one up and then Ruger gets badmouthed. Most of the people that are willing to spend the $2000 it takes to get into one are the type that know what there doing. Put them on the shelf for $500 and every swinging **** that has a credit card is going to buy one. (including myself) Dont get me wrong I would love to be able to buy a 5 shot .480 from ruger and as long as im dreaming make it a 4 5/8s blued vaquaro. Id probably wait and buy one used for even less when as with the smith 500 and the .454s they sell like hotcakes at first until people realize that there not for them and sell them for 2/3s of what they paid for them. I think that Ruger knows that for the first couple years theyd sell then the market would fall out. What I personally would rather see Ruger do is consentrate on the .45 and .44 and offer a custom shop gun for a couple hundred more then a standard one that address the flaws in there factory gun. Fit it up properly barrel lenght of your choice, line bore it, finish it right, good blueing real case hardening lapped barrels, no stupid warning on the barrel, and a set of nice grips that fit like a FA gun. I think there would be more of a demand for something like that. I have a slug of Rugers and so do alot of you. How many do you have that dont at least have or need an action job a nice set of grips and a belt mountain pin put in them! I have none. Now a nice .45 vaquaro like that would be a sweetheart and Ruger could do this for half the price of the custom guys! I have and shot alot of the big bores but if honesty came before pride a good .44 or .45 will do 99% of what they will do there cheaper to load more fun to shoot and can be handled by anyone that will at least shoot them a little. Sorry for all the rambling to much coffee this morning :)

Right on Lloyd!!!!!  Too many people try to substitute a bigger gun for just a little more work on their hunting skills.  Most of taking game is being there long enough and stealthily enough and shooting straight enough to get the job done the way it should be done.  How many 1200 lb. steers has my butcher killed with one shot from a .22 long rifle?  Hundreds!! To me that says it all--shot placement.
