223 and Sassy's First Deer
« on: December 25, 2012, 04:23:43 PM »
Grandkids (Sassy & Rooster) went deer hunting this afternoon, Me and Josh just went along for the ride and cleaning. Sassy knocked this doe down at 150 yards with a single 45gr Rem UMC hollow point bullet.I told her to put it on the neck and she did, bang flop, take pictures and field dress.Rooster will get his chance tomorrow. As you can see by the Wound channel picture it was very devastating.Bullet went in the neck then went down the side till it exited out in front of rear leg.Josh said it looked like some of the wounds he saw in Iraq. I never expected to see a 45 gr hollow point penetrate that far.
But I do have a very Happy Grandaughter and needless to say so is her Dad and I

Well that was a Merry Christmas.  Geeze George, whoda thunk a 45 gr. factory HP could do something like that.  Was that Sassy's first deer?  Give her a hug from us.

Congrats to Sassy!  Question, who had the biggest smile, the young hunter, her dad or her granddad?

Great story! That 223 did some damage.

Congrats to Sassy! There are no better moments in the outdoors than those "first success" stories with our kids and grand kids... my youngest got a .243 Super Light for Christmas and starts hunting with us next fall... she says she is excited to go... but, I can't wait! The Rooster had to keep up with Sassy. He used the same 223 Handi Super Light to knock down a doe yesterday. It was standing broadside about just a further out than Sassy's . Josh estimated it to be 180 meters. ( He thinks in meters because the Army makes him ;D )
He now thinks deer hunting is easy and he is an expert marksman because he has got 4 deer in 2 years.
Again the 45gr hollow point elcheapo Remington bullets performed beyond belief. Bullet went thru the shoulder rib cage destroyed the heart exited the other side ribs and the offside shoulder.
What was really remarkable the doe when to the ground, then tried to stand up but fell over in place.I never will understand how an animal can sustain that much damage and still move
Picture shows the exit wound to the off side rib cage

Josh shot a nice doe as well with my old Ruger Ultralite 250Savage.Usual results Drt about 80 yards (giving him the benefit of the doubt ;D )
Now we got a bunch of jerky to make .

It is amazing that such a tiny pill would wreck so much havoc.  Here I was wondering if an 85 gr. BTHP Gameking was too light out of the .243.  That sucker shoots like a laser.  I think I'm missing a bet by not trying it.  Give Rooster and Sassy a congrats and a hug from a couple of Damned Yankees.

Awesome on you for taking her hunting!

.223 is a under estimated round for sure.  Frankly it's all about velocity unless you don't mind tracking them.  My father has been hunting with a .270 for decades.  Got a deal on a .243 popped a couple with that and was like man it puts them on the ground just like the .270 then he got into a .45-70 for primitive hunting.  Hit a doe great shot at 220 yards.  She ran off.

We found her 30 yards off into the woods.  Was a clean kill shot through the heart.  He was scratching his head trying to figure out how she even took a single step after getting hit with that cannon.  Then I had to explain it too him, and break all his myths about bullets, and stopping power. lol

Basically velocity kills.  Everything else just makes them bleed to death.  .444 marlin, and .45-70 just make them bleed to death real darn fast. lol.

.223 is a smoking hot laser of a round especially when not fired out of a 16" barrel M-4.  I recommend it to people looking for a kids caliber all the time.
They're like it's too light, etc.  Then I have to explain to them a average doe around here weighs 90 - 120lbs.  You average grown man weighs 180lbs.  Bullet is a man killer out to 400 meters with a 20" barrel.  A deer inside of 200 yards is literally dead meat.

I believe the NATO version of the .223 was adopted not because it killed well at 400 yards, but because it wounded.  A wounded man takes three out of combat.  A dead man takes but one.  If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

That and the ammo is relatively light compared to 7.62  A big consideration when you're carrying a bunch.
