Right string length?

Folks:  I found an old stick-bow at my summer place ... with no string.  Nice piece of wood; needs new grip-wrap, but that should be a nice project. It's exactly 60-inches long, with very little curve at this point.  My recollection is it was a 36-pounder.   I'd like to get it up & running again so the grandkids could use it.  Any idea what the proper string-length should be?  Thanks,  Peter F.

Do you know, or can you estimate what the brace height is??  It sounds like a longbow.  My advice is to find some strong nylon cord, and make a bowstring, then adjust the loops, till it looks about right.  Measure the string ON THE BOW while strung, and get a flemished string made for it.  Here is one of many sources for strings:

Generally speaking, the normal string length for a longbow will be 3" less than the bow length, 4" if it is a recurve.  With a flemish twist bowstring, brace height is somewhat adjustable by either twisting the string tighter or looser to alter the effective length of the string.

Thanks to you both.  You've suggested a good starting approach.  I've got some suitable cord that I can experiment with.  Once I've got a good length sorted out, I'll get a made-up flemished string.  Thanks again  Peter F.

Do not use a piece of cord,It will not stand up and probably will end up dry firing the bow and ruining it,or you.!!!There are lots of string makers that can do it right for you.
