Ruger No. 3 questions ? ? ? ?
« on: February 17, 2013, 01:44:44 PM »
Hi guys, I bought a Ruger No. 3 and don't have possession of it yet as its in transit and I have a few questions...

Its in 223, does anyone know the barrel twist?  The serial number dates it to 1978.

Also, it has a scope but I'm wondering if the stock comb height was designed for a proper cheek rest for iron sights or for use with a scope?

I'll see for me self in about a week but some feedback now could give me a head start on figuring out what I'm going to do to it.  I wanted a No. 3 ever since I learned of them several years ago and by random luck I recently found one.  I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks for your help,

Mine is in 45-70 so I do not know the twist of a 223.
But when I shoulder mine I look right down the sights.  If the scope is low mounted then maybe, if not you are going to have to pick you head up or put one of the foam combs on it.

That's what I suspected.  It's coming with a scope but I think I'll remove the bases and use the irons.

The sights look very similar to those on the 10/22, do you know if they are the same?  I have a 10/22 with the Williams fire sights that I really like.  If they are the same I might get a set for this rifle.

Yes same sights as the older 10/22s.

Have both a #1 and #3 and even with a #1 stock on the #3 still have problems using a scope. Frank

Mine is about the same vintage... 223,... and I just tested it yesterday via the cleaning rod trick... its a 1 in 10 twist.  Then I looked in my realoading book, and it said that they are 1 in 10.  I just got it, and will start playing soon with bullets in the 60 gr. area.  Bob

At least in that cartridge it won't deform your middle finger permanently.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.
