What to expect from my first T/C
« on: January 13, 2013, 05:55:45 AM »
So after many years of using my H&R i have fallen in love with hunting with my single shot rifles. So i decided to step up to the next level and order myself a new T/C Pro hunter just looking for some input on what to expect on the diffidence in quality and performance from the H&R to the Encore. From everything i have read they are real shooters just figured i would tap into this group for some experienced owners.I hand load all my ammo and i primary shoot .223 and .270 plus plan on getting a rim fire barrel so any suggestions on barrels would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I have only handled a Pro Hunter in stores, so I don't have any real world experience. The reason I was never interested in one is that they are very heavy, especially in the smaller calibers, and the barrels are excessively long. For a .223, a Contender Carbine with a 21 or 23 inch barrel is much easier to carry in the field. A 28 inch barrel is counter productive! You can cut it down, but why would you have to?

OTH the Encore is much stronger and well suited to high performance big bore cartridges. What barrel did you order?

John may have a point on the smaller cals, although i don't think its enough to worry about.   Guess it depends on the person, weight didn't bother me to carry.   And if for field carry or bench shooting when hunting.    A 270 ought to do just fine and not be anymore to carry than a bolt rifle, same with a 22-250 IMO.   As he said, a Contender 21" 223 for carry would be nicer than on an Encore maybe, but still a personal thing.   If you hunt anything off a portable bench, etc the weight won't be as much of an issue though.

Barrel choice is going to come down to your uses... what you hunt, how you hunt, how far you shoot, but the sky is the limit for choices if you also consider custom barrels.

YMMV

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

My main hunting is done from a ground blind off of shooting stick and i live and hunt in MO. over a 400 acre bean/corn field so 400 yard shots are not out of the ? but most of my shots are at  100-250  yards.I prefer a heavy barrel and i am used to the weight so it not a concern just looking for accurate thanks for the input guys.

All of my Encore barrels were the 24 inch standard contour. I than bought a 26 inch heavy barrel 25-06. It shot great but a little to heavy
for carry so I sold it. I then bought a Pro Hunter in 280. Same deal it was heavy and especially front heavy. So I sold that and
now own just 24 inch barrels. IMO their just more handy to carry and hunt with. I guess that if I was sitting in a blind the PH barrel
might not be bad.

I have a Pro Hunter Frame with the standard Encore Synthetic Buttstock and Forend. For barrels I have two 24" Stainless Steel, one in .223 and one in .30-06. Yes there is a difference in weight between the standard Encore Synthetic Buttstock and Forend vs the Pro Hunter Synthetic Buttstock and Forend. The Pro Hunter Synthetic Buttstock and Forend are considerablly lighter as weighed on my gunsmith's scale.

I chose to go with the 24" Standard Contour Barrels due to the fact that I wanted a compact package. With the Encore that equates to a 24" Barreled Rifle about the same length as my wife's Remington Model 700 .308 with it's 18 1/2" Barrel albeit the Encore is heavier.

As to how my Encore Barrels shoot, I am quite pleased after I was able to get my forend issues resolved. I had my gunsmith pillar bed my synthetic forend and found the screw torque that my barrels shot the best at and have been rewarded with MOA or better groups consistantly now.

I have a 24 inch blue tapered Encore barrel in 270 Winchester that shoots well under MOA.  Ditto on a Pro Hunter 28 inch barrel in 300 Win. Mag.  I believe with handloading, pretty much any scoped Encore barrel, including pistol barrels, will by far the majority of the time shoot 1 MOA or better but some barrels are better than others.

I personally like 24 inch barrels a lot; probably more than the longer barrels since they are a little handier to use and in my hands seem about as accurate as the longer heavier barrels.
