Ruger .22/45 Any Thoughts?
« on: March 14, 2012, 01:23:31 PM »
I like the looks  and feel of the Ruger .22/45 with the 4" slab sided barrel.

Anyone have any experience with this?    Thanks.

Mine is the 5.5" bull. Have a Burris Fastfire II red dot on it, mounted with the dove tail adapter. It's a great plinker. Haven't done any modifications to it. If you get one, get an Ultimate Clip Loader.

I've got two, one a 5" Bull Barrel, the other a Slabside Target. Great guns, solid as a rock and stone reliable. The Slabside Target stacks bullets at 25yds, with a red dot, the shorter Bull Barrel shoots somewhat larger groups with the open sights. It would no doubt benefit from an optic as well.
Having said all that, I like the traditional Ruger Mkll grip and the all steel construction better. If I were doing it over that's what I'd get.

Have both a MK III standard bull ( 5.5 ) and a 22/45 (5.5 , bull ) in the safe.  Both have red-dot type optics.  I can truely say I prefer the standard MK III over the 22/45.  Ruger claims the 22/45 has the same grip angle and control placement as a 1911.....maybe , but not in my opinion.  I have a couple 1911s and they don't feel the same as the 22/45...... OMHO  ;D   I like the all steel MK III.  Both shoot pretty much the same with their prefered ammo....BTW , each prefers different ammo for the best accuracy...but will digest most all 22 LR ammo.

I have two MK IIIs, a MK II and now a 22/45. I waited for the 22/45 to get removable grips because the standard molded in grip was a little thin for me. I have replaced the grips with thicker checkered grips, replaced the hammer with a VQ MK II hammer and bushing, replaced the mag release with an extended mag release and replaced the rear sight with a VQ Bomar-like rear sight. I am very happy with it. It is super accurate and may replace my MK IIIs as my go-to .22 auto.

I just spent yesterday with another forum member at the range we shoot at. Couple hundred rds thru my 6 inch slab side. Still using open sights and can hold my own or better with other shooters. Using mix and match ammo I had from broken boxes and left overs, no misfires or jambs,

Just traded for a 5 1/2 inch bull a week ago. Shoots great when it shoots. Having a problem with FTE. Some researching online tells me this is a common problem that is easily corrected. I've ordrerd a Volquartsen extractor and all FTE's should be corrected soon.

Ive been looking at that 22/45 Lite, but then, for me, carry weight is important, I mostly dont want to notice it until I want it. I played with a 22/45 soon after they came out and it was very good, especially for some one with a 1911 (doesnt feel exactly the same, but WAY closer than the original that'll hunt 'coons until you re-adapt). Im not a fan of the take down, but it isnt like you have to do it all the time.
Just food for thought, how about the other 22LR 1911 style guns out there now?

I've had one since they came out, its as accurate as me...lol. it will fire most anything i feed it, like most ruger semi's its built to tight tolerances so it gets dirty enough to gum up the works fairly quickly. FTE's very common usually the first sign a good cleaning is in order.so keep it clean it'll run pretty well.
3-400rnds swab barrel as rinse action with an aerosol cleaner, lightly oil
   8-1000rnds detail strip,clean lightly oil
copper bullets will extend it a little but not a whole lot maybe 2-300 extra rnds before cleaning.
Mine probably has 30k rnds through it ,still all original parts, mag springs are getting a little weak but hey they've been used alot.

All of the 22/45s are well made and very accurate.  Mine shot flawlessly.  However, they are the most difficult to disasemble firearm I had ever owned.  My wife also thought it a little top heavy.  I sold it off for what I had in it and reinvested in a SR22 recently. I don't regret it.

I like mine.  I purchased it to practice sight and trigger control for competing with my 45.

Do any of you know if and what model of iTEC paddle holster will fit a Ruger 22/45?  Mine is the old model (1990s) with a 5.5 in bull barrel.  I seem to recall but can't remember where,  that a holster for some 45acps will also fit a 22/45.  Doesn't have to be an iTEC, can be a Blackhawk/Fobus.  I do not want one that leaves the muzzle end of the barrel protuding out of the bottom.  Thanks for any help/suggestions

I must have liked the looks of the 5.5" Target version with removable grip panels, because I walked out of a gun show this past weekend with one.
I haven't shot it yet.  I might do so tomorrow.
