New member, short intro & my first build.
« on: January 01, 2013, 12:19:36 PM »
Hi everybody..

Iˋm 46 years old, got 3 sons and a VERY understandig wife :-) I live i Norway, where shooting and having fun with BP is allmost banned, so I envy you guys from US that (still) may play and have fun without the cops running down my door every time Iˋm in the mood for som fun..
I have been interested in shooting, hunting, wildlife as loong as I remember. I have found interest in machining, and as my first project what could be better than building av model of anaval cannon:-) The dimesions are aprox, barrel: 10" and bore is cal .50.
I load it with 40grains of BP, and it gives a nice strong report. (do not shoot projectiles)
My next project is buliding the same model, but upscale it 50%, I learned a lot during my first build so the next will hopefylly be even better. Pictures are enclosed..

Have a great new year folks :-)

Even though you are only shooting blanks (for now, at least), you should make sure the chamber wall thickness is sufficient for safety.  The forum recommends walls of bore diameter where the powder sits.  If you are building to old plans, those are OK also; we just don't want people building substandard, unsafe barrels and causing injury.

The carriage and the barrel is beautiful. What did you model it after? The bore looks pretty big for a brass barrel. Whats the caliber?

If that first picture was posted from a photo hosting site instead of being an attachment it would be worthy of a kewpie.

The model are buildt after original drawings that I`ve got from a Naval museum in Norway. The carrage is made of oak and darkened with pimented alcohol. The diameter of breach are 35 mm, and the powderchamber (1/3 of the bores lenght) are 10mm. The outer section of the bore is 12.5mm.

I hope that this on the safe side with a 40 grain load, and light wadding.(?) It recoils about 10" when fired..It will only be used as a signal cannon...  Powder and fuses are kept locked away from my sons and friends, and they are well trained in handling guns and ammo.

What do you think, am I on the safe side regarding loads and brech diameter..?

Nice build, looking forward to seeing the 1/2 scale. Are you building from plans? Gotta love the look of brass!...... Gary

Very pretty cannon, nice work.  I have to say though I will have nightmares from your first pic the thought of gnomes with cannons frightens me, haha.

You are welcome here, nero. That is a very attractive barrel and carriage; fine work!
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Thanks for kind comments, its really apriciated and motivates me for my next build. I am more of a model builder than a builder of
real cannons. By real cannons I mean projectile shooting cannons.  :)
So my cannons are for signaling only. This because its not legal to build and shoot these cannons here. Signal guns are in a grey zone regarding the legality og building and shooting.
I will be making a GB mortar, but will proberbly se very little action  :-\  Anyway, I love the challange of building and love to work with brass and good looking wood..
My current build are of the same 24 pounder you see abow, but 50% bigger. Paralell I will be building a GB Yorktown mortar.
Cant have only one cannon  :)

Iˋll promise pictures when they are done + some fire and smoke
