Savage 311 question
« on: January 08, 2013, 06:58:43 PM »
I was recently given a Savage/Stevens 311 SxS in 16 gauge. I would like to restock it because the stock had  been modified. Brownells has walnut stocks for the 311 in 12 gauge. Can anyone tell me if the 16 Gauge uses the same aciton as the 12 Gauge? Or does it use the action for the 20 Gauge size?

Back in the 70's, I had a 311 in 16ga with a cracked stock.  A local gunsmith told me it was the same stock as the 12ga model.  Don't know for sure though, as I ended up selling it without replacing the stock.  Maybe check Gun Parts Corp?

Well.........what I am learning, is that the stocks and frames varied widely on the 311s. :-\ There were various sized frames, a "square frame" version and a "notched frame" version. There are also variations in tang length. Mine happens to be a notched frame.

It looks like I'm goin' to have to whittle a new stock, which I can do, but really don't have the time these dayz. I guess this one will have to go in the back of the safe until I retire someday. :(

YES!!

There are a few different 311 frame's!!

I also have one in 16ga and its stock was cracked on both sides... I could also only find 12ga and I did not want to chance the fit so I fixed mine!!

I carefully clamped the stock into proper position. Then I drilled thru the wrist where it was cracked. I used 1/8'' hard wood dowels and epoxy. I slid the dowels in with epoxy all over them, with it still clamped together. It worked out just fine!!
