270 REN ??
« on: February 14, 2004, 08:57:58 AM »
I'm always looking for some new caliber to play with and was thinking of the 270 REN.  Have any of you worked with this round ?  If so, what are your comments ?  Supposedly developed for the Handgun Siloette game.

Had one up until recently and sold it. I will say that it is an excellent little round ,very accurate , low recoil , excellent for NRA Hunter's Pistol and useful for varmit shooting at 100 yards or less. With all that said why did I get rid of it ? Well I like the little 30's better. For the Field Pistol I use my 32/20 and my 30 Carbine . The selection of .277 bullets is limited for the 10" velocity and I was not able to work up any cast bullet loads that I liked (or the barrel liked) for the 270 Ren. If you get one with the intention of shooting the 90 Sierra and H110 powder 3/4 to full velocity it is a great round and will do everything you expect of it. I had thought of having a revolver rechambered to the 270 but never did and thought it would have been a wonderful shooter with a 85 CSW at 1500 or so.  By all means get one and try it because you will be pleasantly surprised with the accuracy and almost absence of recoil. I now have the two little 30's , a 30/221, 30 Herrett and 30/30--14" TC's. If you don't currently have one a 10" 22 Hornet is also a very nice caliber for a 10" Contender. Good luck on you efforts my 2 cents worth on the caliber.

I shoot a 270 Ren in field pistol and love it. I have a Ken Light full length rib w Bomar/Bond sights for production then clamp a 3" high rise w/Tasco red dot on it for any sight. This little rig shoots way better than I can ever shoot it. I use bulk Rem. 100gr psp and 9gr AA #9. It will take all the field pistol animals at our range and all the big bore ones but the rams. The twist will not stabilize bullets over 100gr. Of course for field pistol it will not do any more than a hornet, but both are fun. Hope this helps. Wayne Fish

Sounds like a cartridge that would be fun to work with.  Is the recoil mild enough that you could use a higher power rifle scope ?

When I shot NRA in Texas a couple of guys use the  Leupold vari-3 in 6.5x20 and full power loads would occasionally "tap" one of them on their shooting glasses but nothing more than a touch . Shoot with high power scope , it was routinely done in the 1990's so not much has changed since then . Your call based on your hold and shooting style.

The high rise mount seens to make the gun recoil more down at the rear instead of back. I started out with a 3x9 shotgun scope on it with good results. This is really a fun cartridge to play with. I had 3 of them at one time.
