41 magnum loads
« on: December 21, 2012, 03:46:19 PM »
Just picked up a 41 mag ruger blackhawk. Anyone care to share some load info. Planning on getting into casting so I would appreciate some suggestions on what molds to look into. For now I will be shooting jacketed. Gun will be used for plinking and whitetail hunting.

I use the rcbs mould drops a 215 gr swc. I like unique for light/medium loads and 2400 for the full power rounds
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

I have some old Lyman moulds, Lee, and LBT but I don't cast much.  Overall, I think the RCBS is a good one and you don't need gas checks. I think Midway may offer a rebate on the RCBS mould - you might want to check. I haven't cast with the RCBS but I have shot the bullet.  I really like Unique for medium and light loads.  I've used quite a bit of 2400 for heavier loads and H110/Win 296 for my heaviest loads.  IMR or H 4227 can be very good for heavier loads too. I've played with Lil Gun some but for some reason it makes me nervous. Think I'll stick with H110 for most heavy.  I've had good luck with Green Dot (light loads), Herco (med), and loved some AL8 I inherited. Search Handloader Magazine / data they put out some 41 mag loading data now and then. I like Ken Waters Pet loads for the 41 but the data is getting a bit old.

I just picked up some Trail Boss to use with 215 cast swcs for some light loads.  Right now I'm in Louisiana duck hunting when I found the Trail Boss so will have to wait till I return to the frozen north to do some loading.  will let you know how it works out.

The April-May 2012 Handloader Magazine had an article on the 41 magnum with some cast and jacketed bullets.  John Haviland lists quite a few loads for the RCBS cast bullet from 750 fps with WAP to 1441 fps with Lil Gun.  You might want to look it up.  Unlike him, I have had some spectacular accuracy(well for ME) with 170 gr jacketed bullets, especially the discontinued Remingtons.  But Sierra 170s do well for me too in my Bisley. HTH

Thanks guys. I already have that particular issue of handloader, good stuff in there. Looks like I need to get some unique and 2400, already have lots of h110. Anybody ever use berrys bullets for their plinking\target loads. I loved them in my 44 mag rifles, probably gonna give them a try in the 41

I have used Berry's now and then. The first time I didn't know the rules for plated bullets and tried to run them at the medium levels of jacketed and had poor accuracy.  I would find the spent bullets in the snow with chunks of plating off the sides. And widely scattered holes on the paper targets.

Then I ended up recently with a bunch of old plated bullets - maker unk - probably Berry's.  I went to their website and followed their recommendations for following cast bullet level loads. They have been ok - good enough for plinking at short to moderate distances (less than 50 yds).  Mine are a flat nose truncated cone and would probably be fine on smallish game.  Wouldn't try them on big game tho. fun to shoot milder loads in my Mt Gun.

Bucco921, I have had good accuracy with 210 grain Rem JSP bullets in my 41Mag using 20.5 grains of H110 and Win WLP primers.  This load would put three shot touching at 50 yds when siteing through the 3x Burris scope.  These bullets however are no longer available and I have some Nosler hollow points loaded up but haven't had a chance to shoot them as it has been colder temps than I care to shoot in.  What kind of bothers me about the Noslers is the diameter that is advertised to be .410" only measures .4095".   I don't know if that will be a problem with their accuracy or not but I have to find a bullet that will shoot.  I tried the Hornady XTP hollow points but the accuracy just wasn't there although I did shoot a doe at about 40 yds. with it.  I just hate it when I find something that works and the manufacturer discontinues it.  If you find something that shoots well please post your load here because I will be looking.  Thanks, Dennis

I use h110 and mag primmers for .357, 41,44mag and ruger only loads in my 45 colt. Gives good accuracy in all of them and all have been good hunting loads for deer.
