US government advises computer users to disable Java software  Published January 12, 2013
Associated Press
  •    April 23, 2007: The Java logo is shown at Sun Microsystems' offices in Menlo Park, Calif. (AP)
WASHINGTON –  The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is advising people to temporarily disable the Java software on their computers to avoid potential hacking attacks.
The recommendation came in an advisory issued late Thursday, following up on concerns raised by computer security experts.

Experts believe hackers have found a flaw in Java's coding that creates an opening for criminal activity and other high-tech mischief.
Java is a widely used technical language that allows computer programmers to write a wide variety of Internet applications and other software programs that can run on just about any computer's operating system.
Oracle Corp. bought Java as part of a $7.3 billion acquisition of the software's creator, Sun Microsystems, in 2010.
Oracle, which is based in Redwood Shores, Calif., had no immediate comment late Friday.

What an interesting event. Usually pouring java on a computer disables the computer user. Now it's turned about for the computer user to do some disabling. I'm all for it.

Guzzi. I don't have a source but I read the same thing quite some time ago and I'm pretty sure we had a thread on it here with obummerbots supporting his choice, in fact, I know we did.
I posted this thread because I have NO IDEA what java even is and thought that some of you might be affected in some way. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Regardless of who works for whom, this is for real.  There are websites out there that are able to use this flaw to compromise your computer and install anything they want, effectively taking control of it.  Disabling Java (or uninstalling it entirely) is a prudent move.  Unless you need it for something specific, right now it is too much of a risk to leave running.

Way too many websites need java scripts to make not having it feasable.
Get away from Windows as your operating system is the first big step to computer security.
Swap to LINUX and most hackers will bypass you. Most of their stuff is written to attack windows based systems.

Java and Java Script are two different (but unfortunately similarly named) things.  Java, or the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) supplied by Oracle is what is the problem.  (Not that Java Script isn't a security risk as well, but that's a different topic.)
