444 Marlin and Crimping results
« on: February 26, 2004, 08:46:48 AM »
Loaded up my first cases for the 444 Marlin. When I crimped them I put a crimp in the 1st three and then thought I'd try a little more in the second three cases.  They were crumpled a bit as a result of over crimping.

When I shot them today, the 1st three ( the ones with a proper crimp) printed on the paper three inches higher than the cases with the over crimping.

Not a scientific study, and I don't know what it means, but I thought I'd pass the information along to you guys.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
If I can make it go bang it can't be that hard to do.

I'm gonna try using a taper crimp die from my 44 mag for my 444 and see if that works out, I think it should.

Crimping 444 Marlins

Reloader and Graycg:

Graycg:  I don't know if the taper crimp die for the 44 magnum will work on the longer 444 marlin, although it might.  I purchased a taper crimp die specifically for the 444 and when I checked the part numbers the numbers for the 44 magnum and the 444 Marlin were different.  I cannot taper crimp 44 magnums in the 444 taper crimp die but you may be able to mount the 44 magnum taper crimp die higher in your press to possibly get it to work on the 444s.  Ifin ya'll jes gets one fer the triple 4 you can save yourself the effort of re-adjusting for each cartridge.  Just a thought.

Reloader:  get a taper crimp die for that 444.  I tried the usual crimping method on my 444s and got results similar to yours - then I read the data from Marshall Stanton at BearTooth Bullets about the use of the taper crimp die and have been using it since.  It should work for you as well and I hope it does.

Mikey.

If results get variable, blow 10 bucks on the Lee Factory Crimp Die.  No more problems with crushed cases because the there is no pressure on the bullet and the crimp is from the side in the form of a fingered collet in a tapered chamber.  Also consistant because the crimp does not rely on the trimmed case length.
