Winchester primers
« on: January 06, 2013, 02:57:04 AM »
I bought some winchester primers as it was all I could find. I also have a few old winchester primers I picked up years ago. After loading a few of the new ones I re remembered why they were still on the shelf.
With these primers my velocity spread opens up considerably. With the CCI and some Wolf primers I have from the last panic buying I get a standard velocity of 16 to 20 fps. with the Winchester I get 60 to 65 fps. Anyone else notice a difference in winchester?

I prefer Winchester primers but other brands have worked well in certain applications, and no I have not seen large spreads in velocity with Win. primers.  I suspect that if you are trying to swap from another brand to Win primers without working up from scratch you will probably see that happen.

I have always used CCI until of late when I've had to take what I could find.  Got a load of magnum primers I didn't need, but they shoot fine anyway.  Bought some Federal and some Winchester, no problems with either, but completely different load workups compared to CCI.  So....try 'em and maybe they'll do the job?

I think a lot of what your problem may be is the type of powder--some powders may ignite easier than others. I have always had good results with Winchester primers--also do well with Remington primers and as of late--have not had any complaints with Sellier&Belot primers. CCI primers are a bit hotter IMO though--only reason I don't use them is that I have had problems seating them in certain brands of brass.

I use Win LR primers in two pet 30-30 loads and get superb accuracy, so while I haven't chronographed them for consistency, the results on paper suggest that the spread is pretty darned small.

I also use CCI 200s for some other applications, and like those as well.

For large pistol all I use is Win primers , the fact that I can use them for both standard as well as mag loads is a BIG plus , that and they work very well is just a bonus .  ;)

Anyone using the Winchester primer with Universal Clays in a 44 mag? If so how is it?
