Graf and Sons Black Powder
« on: January 13, 2013, 06:23:00 AM »
Has anyone tried the Graf and Sons black powder, its German made using alder - similar to the Swiss brand.  Price is just a dollar cheaper than Goex and I hate to start on a powder change and have to go back later.

I've stuck with Goex for several years now.  I am well aware that there are powders that perform slightly better, or are slightly cheaper, but I don't shoot enough for either to matter.  Goex performs well enough in my rifles, and even saving a dollar a pound only saves three dollars per year.  While the more expensive powders offer about the same cost increase, I am satisfied with what I am using.  That's my take on it.  If ya just want to try something else, try it.  If you just want to save a few bucks, use a lighter load.  When the cost savings works out to the cost of a full pound of powder (for high volume shooters) it might be worth trying a few less costly powders.

Grafs powder is simply Schuezen relabeled. It's good powder, and like other European powders is screened a bit different from goex. 2f Grafs/Schuetzne/Swiss is about the same kernel size as Goex 3f. So you can't go straight across from Goex, I usually end up reducing the charge about 5 grs when going with Grafs.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Reason I am looking;  I have always tried to improve and reduce costs for all my shooting interests.  I have heard very good things about the Swiss and a few about the Schuezen as far as accuracy and cleaner burning.  What has held me back is price.  I use approx 2.5 lbs of black powder a year and since I cannot find it around my area I am looking at ordering from G&S.  A dollar is a dollar and a change in powder means I get to shoot more...OK, so its really all about an excuse to shoot.  But if I can safe a buck, shoot more, improve accuracy (need all the help I can get) then I am up for it.  Something to consider.  Thanks Keith44 for the reminder on granulation size, I had forgot that.

Graf & Sons is shooting fine in mine and seems a little less dirty too.  Size is identical to goex FFFg as I have it here and compared it.  Maybe this has changed in recent times, dunno.  I intend to do some express cartridges for my 40-60 Marlin soon and that's the last test for me of it's capabilities.  If I remember I'll report back if there's any difference there.

check locally in your want ads.
i just picked up some a few days
ago from an individual for 10.00 per.

the only local source i know of here
is goex for right at 30.00

depends on your local laws.

you might also check to see if there
are any reenactment groups local to
you that would most likely buy in bulk.
maybe they can help you out.

I am using the Graffs 3f in my 32 and 50cal with good results. I am also using the 2f in my 45-70. 70gr of wich gives a nice crack and impressive smoke ring. A couple times a year they put their powder on sale. I picked up a few pounds for $11.95 a pound in November.

Did some research on the net and found a source 30 miles from home that has Goex for 15.00 a lb.  Only problem is that they are not open on weekends or evenings.  I then found a guy a work with that drives thru the area on his way home and he will pick it up for me.  Guess I will go this route.  North Carolina Charlotte area is getting hard to find black powder.  I changed over from substitutes years ago and do not want to go back.  Any one who knows of a source in the Charlotte area, please let me know.
