Wal-Mart Plans to Hire 100,000 Veterans, Buy More U.S. Products  By Matthew Rocco
Published January 15, 2013
FOXBusiness    Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) announced today it will hire at least 100,000 veterans leaving active duty in the next five years, while the retail giant also expects to buy an additional $50 billion in U.S. products over the next decade.

Starting Memorial Day this year, the company will offer a job to any honorably discharged veteran in his or her first 12 months off active duty.
“Hiring a veteran can be one of the best business decisions you make,” president and chief executive Bill Simon said in a statement. “Veterans have a record of performance under pressure. They're quick learners and team players. They are leaders with discipline, training, and a passion for service. There is a seriousness and sense of purpose that the military instills, and we need it today more than ever.”

Wal-Mart said it has spoken with the White House about its plans, adding that the Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense and major American employers will convene in the next several weeks to encourage business to train and hire military veterans returning home.

“We have a lot of announcements made at the National Retail Federation’s Big Show, but today’s announcement by Walmart President and CEO Bill Simon tops them all. It is nothing less than visionary for a great American company to make such a bold pledge to help our American heroes,” Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation, said.
“Walmart is challenging the industry to follow their lead, and I have every reason to believe that retailers – the industry responsible for one out of every four jobs – will respond accordingly.”
The company’s expansion in domestic products will include categories like sporting goods and apparel, saying it hopes to bolster onshore U.S. production in high potential areas like textiles, furniture and higher-end appliances.

“At the heart of our national political conversation today is one issue: creating jobs to grow the economy,” Simon said. “We are meeting with our suppliers on domestic manufacturing and are making a strong commitment to move this forward.”
Wal-Mart also said it will offer new initiatives to help part-time employees find full-time opportunities with the company.
Shares of Wal-Mart were up slightly in early morning trading.

I'm glad for the vets, but It's all about PR with them. Smoke screen. By hiring this many vets at the starting rate they will cut full timers hours and part timers who have been with them for many years, my old store has cut everybody, except mgt, to under 30 hours a week. This deal will look good to the public and help their dirty image, sales will go up as well as profits.
A friend of mine was in a WM in Owensboro KY today  and asked about 223 ammo and the mgr said that when the warehouses were out of ammo they would no longer order it. POWDERMAN.  Shocked Shocked

Yep, smokescreen.  they have bowed to liberal pressure already by taking guns and ammo off the shelves.

After fighting in Afghanistan and watching my buddies get blown up with IEDs, and maybe shooting some guys that may or may not have deserved it, I don't think I could handle the stress of working at a Walmart. There's only so much a man can take in life, and it could easily push me over the edge of madness.

How many horrid sights can one endure in life? I don't know and I don't think I'm going to tempt fate by working somewhere that has flocks of gargantuan spandex-clad women, middle aged men wearing tutus or kilts, beer bellied guys with butt crack showing prominently, and strung out weirdos connecting with hoi polloi at a level so basic that even Dante could not imagine it.

No thank, man. I'll do something calming like working in a coal mine or an explosives factory.

How would these Vets manage to live on what Wally World will pay. Maybe they will try to only hire those that are getting some type of disability pay so they can afford to work at Wally World. I almost feel that I should be sending these Vets sympathy cards.

They would have to have another income, and I don't mean another job. WM refuses to give regular schedules. I've worked all 3 shifts in the same week. They don't want steady long term employees, they want part timers preferably quitting before a year is up, thats the ONLY time a raise is given anymore. They did away with profit sharing, a raise at 6 mo, and merit raises years ago. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

As badly as the local Chinamart treats it's customers I can only imagine how bad they treat thier employees. And what a slap in the face to vets. "In appreciation of your service to a grateful nation we are going to give you an opportunity to work for Wal mart!" Is that the new American Dream? Maybe if Chinamart would actually buy and stock more US made products vets could actually get good jobs for the companies that make those products rather than being spit in thier faces by Wal Mart.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

They could pay them all $60,000 a year, and it would still be less than 1% of their annual profits, which wre over $600 billion last year. That promise is just a cheap PR ploy.

Powderman,

That's interesting. It probably goes a long way toward explaining why Walmart employees resemble and act like McDonalds employees. Er...shades of night of the living dead.

I don't have anything bad to say about Walmart. I just recognize that they offer McJobs, and there's nothing wrong with that. They should be getting no-skill entry level workers, like high school students and people who can't get a job anywhere else. Nothing wrong with that. There is something wrong with expecting it to be something it isn't. Just a set up for disappointment.

As for products, I have a firm rule. Never buy anything at walmart that you expect to last. Manufacturers know the game, and they are required to keep cutting their prices if they want to keep selling to walmart, so the quality drops to a level of junk.

A W*M job typically is not a career, and I don't believe W*M intends for it to be one. If that is what happens for a person so be it. I guess there are at least a dozen careers per store, possibly a few more if delivery drivers and warehouse personnel are included in the mix.

A job at W*M beats a kick in the head while looking for more suitable employment. It is a job offer not a sentence to serve.

The really good help certainly stands out.

I will add this. The store general manager has much to do with the overall experience at a store. I visit plenty of W*M's in a weeks time, and let me assure you they reflect the management style. If you find crap in the lot it'll likely be in the store, in the restrooms, in the back rooms, and in the breakrooms.

I hope aand prayer that we could offer our returning vets something better than a entry level position at a retail store.

My walmart employes zombies. They just walk around with these blank expressions. I hope walmart means well but I have reservations about their motives. The company has little respect for their workers.

MARTY. The look on those faces is representative of bad mgrs, low morale. Low morale affects the effeciency of the employees.
When I was with WM they drasticly cut OUR hours and hired a bunch of new ones at the starting rate of course. The dist mgr and several of his flunkies were visiting one day and one of the women came to me asking questions. She introduced herself and asked me, how can we help your department?? I said, I don't have one anymore, remember?? You abolished that, a look of shock. Then she said, how can we help you personally?? I said, give us back our hours, you are taking food off our table. She quickly left and avoided me every time they came after that. POWDERMAN.  ;) ;)

I've been to Walmarts where the employees did seem to be normal human beings. Helpful, eyes of a living being, etc. But then other walmarts did have employees with the zombie types. The one in my area is depressing to go into. I swear the people are robots. I used to shop there regularly, but truly avoid it now.

I work for a very large financial institution and have no complaints about my pay. I'm probably retiring this year and spend the rest of my days hunting fishing and being with the old lady (notice that's last on my list). Anyway I see how management treats the employees today (like crap). Senior management keep promoting each other and on average they take 80% compensation increases even though the instittution has not shown any positive performance for years. The stock goes nowhere.  They gave the employees 1% raise and they said they were deferring it for 4 months since the institution wasn't doing well. Morale is a joke. Their attitude is if you don't like how we treat you-hit the road-and we can find someone else. Like most companies 50% of the jobs have benn sent to India, Ireland etc. That's corporate America today.
