Remington 700 cdl sf
« on: January 24, 2013, 01:59:34 AM »
Been a while since I bought this rifle. And with 2 surgeries, retiring, & relocating several thousand miles away from where I bought it I finally got to shoot it some.

It's a cdl sf in 257 Roberts. When I got it in Alaska I mounted a scope and rough sighted it in across a lake shooting at a Lilly pad. Then bounced it in a cargo trailer 4,000 miles across the country on the way to Florida. Anyway a few days ago I got it out & took it up to the range here on the ranch. Set up targets and it shot about 6" high and a inch to the left. Moved the crosshairs to zero and the next 2 shots at 100 yards the "boy" said one was right on the other missed the paper. When he brought the target in it was both shots touching. The second shot just opened the hole up slightly. I called it good.

Couple days later I brained a medium size "meat hog" in one of the pastures shooting off a fence post at about 75 yards. Yeah it shoots good. And don't kick and is pretty. I'm happy with it.  :) it's the only bolt gun I own, & all I need here in Florida. Hate to admit it but these Remington SA bolt guns shoot.

But don't tell Swampy I ever said that.  :o

Lloyd, mine has a 24" barrel. It's stainless & fluted. Nice looking with the lighter colored walnut cdl stock.  ;D it's a short action too. So I half to seat the bullets pretty deep. I shot the hog with a 100 gr Barnes but I also have loaded the 117 gr Sierra game kings.

I dont understand remingtons logic in using a short action with the 257. Browning did it too! When rem made there limited run classic in 257 they used the long action. Why this didnt carry over to the cdl is beyond me. It woudnt be a deal breaker for me but still erks me!

I like the feel of the short action. I believe the only thing I'd change would be to shorten the barrel to 22".  ;) but the way it shoots, I think I'll just leave it like it is.

I mounted a leupold m8 3x riflescope on it. And it works well in Florida at the ranges we shoot. I have at least a dozen of these older leupolds. I just traded 3 off that had retucles my eyes won't work with any more. But the one on this cdl is a duplex. Still my favorite retucles.

I got a wild notion a couple weeks ago & ordered a new conquest 3-9 from cameraland. Though I might put it on this rifle but I think I've changed my mind and will just keep the 3x on it.  :o

Only other scope I might consider mounting on it would be a new leupold 6x42. I love those too.

I know you dont like variables but both my 257 roberts wear 2x7 vx2 leupolds. Couldnt think of a better scope for a gun in that caliber.
