I am not the best technition in the world but reassembly of a 1911 is not susposed to be rocket science.
I shot my .38 super yesterday and cleaned it.
I scratched the dagone thing wen putting it back together. Not a big deal it just makes me mad, sitting here thinking about it.

I see the scratches on firearms the same way as groups on targets. Old hands amd old eyes can't do what they once did,\.

I think on my very first 1911 I did the idiot scratch as they call it on the slide release lever.  I'm very careful now but who knows as i get older?
On stainless it can be polished out very carefully with the simichrome polish.  On the blued guns there are darker cold bluing kits too.  I would just hide it or leave it.  Its up to you.

Well, I've buggered screws, marked up stocks, wore off bluing, put heavy brush markings on slides etc but in 60 years of handling 1911's I've yet to put on an "idiot" scratch.  If I ever do, I'll probably be damn good and mad at myself too.

I can't tell you how long it takes me to do anything mechanical and it is still not good as some of you boys can do while sitting in a chair and watching TV---I am so jealous 
On the other hand---God loves me.
Therefore, I am a happy man !

I luv ya too Bill. All of my 1911/widebodies have the 'idiot scratch'. I never heard the term until I came here. To me that scratch means nothing except you have taken your pistol apart and managed to put it back together. No harm, no foul.

If it really bugs you keep a permanent marker handy.

there is a chemical that is used to touch up sights when you adsjust them ( read file the front sight down) it's a clear blue in color and works really well at hiding scratches . And don't as how I know it brings tears to my eyes ...............

the only thing I file are my nails.  If I cannot do it with the proper stones I need someone with a mill and knows how to use it.
