The punch line of the discussion was: "It wasn't illegal enough".
The discussion centered around the Newtown shooting. It was between me and a liberal member of the family. His argument was for stricter gun control measures and banning those scary black rifles. I countered by reminding him that it was already illegal for Lanza to use or possess the weapons because of his mental condition, illegal for him to carry them onto school property, illegal to use them to shoot his way into the school, and illegal to murder 26 people with.
His response was: "Yes, but it wasn't illegal enough. We need tougher new laws that will scare people into obeying them."
I couldn't think of a response for that...
