I am thinking about buying a 36 cal. Mowery squirrel rifle.  Can anybody give me any information about the quality of the gun.  I know they are not a custom built gun  but right now I don't have a bundle to spend on a gun to squirrel hunt and just plink around?  Are they good shooters?

I don't know anything about the Mowerys but I just got a Traditions .32 Crockett that so far have been really pleased with the way it shoots. It ran me right about $300.

The Mowerys have been made for quite a while now. Quality on the ones I've seen has been top shelf and they've all been fine shooters. They may
not be custom built but there appears to be a lot of hand fitting on them. The wood is usually nice, too. I'm keeping my eyes open for a target version or one that needs rebarreling. Thought I might build a slug gun on the action. But they don't come up for sale very often-usually a sign their owners are pleased with them.

I have a Mowrey 58 and I am very happy with the rifle.  Of course, each rifle is an individual.  But if you don't buy it, there are a few people that would like the seller's name and address.

I had a 45 Mowrey that was a great rifle but I traded it in a moment of weakness.  Still regret it...

Indian Dave, I have 3 of them and the only complaint I have with them is the stock sits too low for me to get a good sight picture. I modified the butt on all three and it helped a lot. I must say they are tough and reliable. I have 8 other guns and when my lady and I go out to shoot we always grab the little Mowrey's. The calibers are .36, .38(rerifled from a .36) and a 45. Mind you as they come stock they have 1 in 66 rifling that means you will need to stoke them up a bit more in the smaller calibers. Tryit.

I owned a Mowrey .58 many years ago.  I made the stupid mistake of selling it.  I later went back to the fella that I sold it too and tried to buy it back.  He wanted double what he paid for it.  I almost wish I had paid it.  It was the most accurate muzzle loader that I ever shot.  And it had some of the prettiest wood I have ever seen in a non-custom gun.

Just bought a Mowery Rocky Mountain Hunter from Track. It's a .54 caliber with some pretty wood and looks to be in fine shape. Track says it has a few handling marks and I have found them to be completely trustworthy over the years. Now comes the hard part---waiting for it to arrive. I don't have a .54 at the moment, so this will fill a big gap in  my arsenal.

I bought a 36 cal.  about a month ago .  I saw the one you bought from Track you must have jumped on it as soon as it can out.  Mine is very similar except it is brass where yours is browned.  Can't  say I like it  any better. I just took what came along.  I got a good deal so I took it .  Mine shoots really good but I haven't got it plum dialed  in.  I have a 32. long rifle I have been  burning the powder with and about have it where I want it.  So alittle fine tuning and I will jump on the Mowery.  I am more excited about squirrel season coming in than I am deer season this year.  Between the two I ought to be able to blast some bushy tails.

Yup, I called Track as soon as I saw it listed. They don't come up for sale very often and I figured I'd best grab it before I lost out. Been wanting a .54 anyway--now I need one in flint ignition. I figure I'll have this one by Saturday, just in time to work up some loads.

You guys know that you can buy them new from Union Creek muzzleloading or Deer Creek?  There are 4 models in brass or steel at about 320 dollars.

Yes, I had been looking at them when I ran across this one .  It wasn't shot but alittle the owner didn't like the feel of the gun and said the drop didn't suit him.  It just needed a good cleaning and a whole lot of shooting.  I got it for about half the new price so I figured I could get my investment back if I fall out of sorts with it.  So far I haven't got it shooting the way I want to go hunting but  I have 2 weeks til huntin season.

If I'm reading the Union Creek site correctly, the rifles are available as kits, assembled and firable, but needing some work. The price is $340.00, still a very good deal in my estimation. I think the one I just bought from
Track may be an older one--I'll know soon enough.
    Mowery used to make a 12 bore shotgun on this action but it's not listed anymore. It was a nicely balanced, light weight piece that could be carried comfortably all day long. Guess there wasn't much demand for it.

Well, the Mowrey arrived a half hour ago. Just called Track and told them it's a keeper. Other than a few minor handling marks, the rifle looks unfired. The wood is even nicer in person than in the photographs. It's easy to see why this type of action was popular back in the day. The action is just so robust and simple-- it would have appealed to me if I was heading west in 1850. Now to get out and shoot it, probably not until the weekend.

Thanks for the info.  After seeing some of the info. on the site, I was able to find out about "Track", and who or what that is, as well as Mowrey/Deer Creek in Waldron, IN.  I had sent an email about these rifles to Track of the Wolf and got an email from Dave, which stated that he often lists some used Mowrey rifles on his site, and that I should watch his site for them.  He also stated that he knows of no source for new, finished rifles, or NOS parts suppliers which could sell a rifle parts kit.  I also found that Deer Creek is out of business (from a few unconnected sources), but I may still call their last listed number.  You never know.  Maybe one can find something out.  I guess I'll have to watch the used sources to find an iron framed model with a nice curly Maple stock.
