With what you have I'd consider a Model 70 or Model 700 in .308.  The 7mm-08 is no better that the .308 but it's more expensive to shoot by a fair margin.

 Good morning EQ,

The 7/30 is a fine cartridge too but it uses a 30/30 case with the taper blown out and shoulder moved forward. The 7MM STE is a 307 case. While it does share the .506 rim with the 30/30 it is loaded to higher pressure and more the equil of the 7mm/08.

All that's required is the re barrel and chamber a 7mm barrel blank. You also have the opertunities its to go octagon if you desired. Costs would be barrel cost should be in the 3-400$ range complete YOu supplying the firearm.

Another choice might be the 308 Marlin for a off the shelf rifle. As previously suggested.

Well there is that. I'm not against a .308, but sorta wanting something lighter. 6.5mm seems to be the sweet spot, between recoil and energy.

So many say the .308 is a .30-06 is a .300 WM, ... and I have the WM. Now a Model 7 would get my attention in 6MM, 6.5MM, 7MM or .308 sized bullets, hell I would find a .338 Fed hard to turn down for that matter. I find it such a handy sized rifle.

Like I said the 260 Remington is a 6.5, but can be loaded to higher pressures than the 6.5 Swede.  Brass can be made from 308 cases.  Shorter action than the Swede.  If you don't go high capacity like in an AR-10 type weapon.  I like the BLR for fast action and lightweight.  They are very accurate also.  I have one in 308.

I think you should look at a Browning x-bolt in 7mm-08. Get a box of 120 grain and 140 grain Federal Fusions and go shoot it. I think you would like  it better than the BLR but maybe not.  You don't need more than this to take deer and a 22" barrel is quite handy. I like levers but I still have to ask why?

I have rifles capable of deer hunting, 45-70 lever, .325WSM bolt, .300WM bolt, and an AR in 5.56. Do you see what I see in that list? I figured you would.

I'm in Mn. swamp buck country, I'll overlook a slough or may be in rather tight timber, maybe a twenty some acre field. A .243 is pretty much unacceptable to me, would be as bad as owning a Chevy truck, could be a character defect. If the Marlin was flatter shooting I could live with it in bliss forever more.

Knock yourselves out fellas.
I will not sell you on one deer rifle but two.
I find it hard to beat my two Bolt action 308 rifles for deer.
One is a Ruger M77 with open sights for the woods.  It is a fast handleing rifle that shoots deer dead with 180 grain soft points.
The second is a Remington M700V with a 3-9X50 Leupold scope that is great for the wide open spaces and works well with the 165 grain soft points.
I think it would be hard to beat a combination of the two rifles for any and all deer hunting.
So if I were to do it all over again for deer hunting I would want a lighter rifle than the 700 V and would probably want something in stainless.
The short rifle may be turned into a Ruger Compact with a Trijicon 1.25-4X25 scope for the deep dark woods as my eyes get older.

I consider a do over about once a year or so. Right now I'm 50/50 on trading guns. I really miss one and the other not so much.

The .300WM is the one I could most easily send down the road, 'cept for the fact it is the rifle I have the most confidence in. I don't much care about how it gets handled.  It ain't much to look at, it hurts like the devil to shoot. Dang though if it isn't the easiest one to hit what I'm aiming at. It is a plain T3 lite Tikka. I keep telling myself to take the scope and mounts off and put them on a 6.5 Swede Tikka. I would save a pretty good amount of cash with that direct swap. I believe I could expect the same or similar shootability.

I took a pretty girl to the prom last year (elk hunting) a M-70 Super Grade .325WSM. I'd like a pretty date for Homecoming too. The Finlander is fine, the sort you marry I suppose. I've got my eyes on another sassy American though, a South Carolina gal. ;)

EQ, as you probably know the 6.5 swede is the ballistic twin to the 260 Remington. If you like the tikka rifles then just trade for one in either the swede or the 260. I think you would like the reduction in recoil. And the tikka rifles really can't be faulted if you can stand a bolt gun.  ;D

If you actually clean your guns Brownings are good rifles. Ya just can't be lazy and stick em in the corner letting them rust away and expect them to shoot well. Your posts are always negative.

Based on your stated hunting conditions and the cartridges you have narrowed it down to I would say get a Remington Model 7 in the 20" barrel version chambered for the 260 Remington.

As soon as one falls from the sky. ;D  I do like that gun though, they're popular with those who own them too, judgeing by the fact I never see them on the rack. I'm getting pretty stuck on 6.5mm.

Empty Quiver,

Your post asks all of the experienced people on this board to look at your list and tell you what is missing.  And the majority of them are telling you the same thing.  You have a big hole in the middle of your collection, and what is missing is either a .30-06 or a .308 Winchester, perhaps the two greatest mid-bore cartridges ever invented.

You repeatedly answer by saying that these cartridges can't do anything that your .300 Magnum won't do.  I apologize for saying that you are incorrect.    They will kill any deer, black bear or elk on the planet stone dead, out to 300 yards, with far far less muzzle blast, muzzle jump, muzzle flash, recoil, noise, powder and barrel length (and with factory ammo costing half as much) as a .300 Mag., and without blasting clean through the animal at moderate ranges.

Using your logic, you should throw away your .45-70, because there is absolutely nothing that a .45-70 can do that your .300 Mag won't do better.

Try shooting a box of your .300 Mags at the bench, and then switch rifles and shoot a box of .308 Winchester.  I believe that from that point onward, you will always grab a .308 for your deer hunt.

  Hope this helps. :-)

So what you are saying is a 300mag is way more than a 308/30-06, not the same thing only different. I here so much denigration about the .300 as being only X more powerful than a 30-06 and completely unneeded. So with a couple less grains of powder I can have a 30-06 can't I?

I addressed the 300 as being redundant, but it is the gun I have the most confidence in. I consider the battle rifle rounds as too much for deer hunting when it comes to blast recoil etc., well too much might be an over statement. How about more than enough? Except for range a 30-30 meets my criteria on most accounts, and extending the range is a consideration here. I do know the .308 / 30-06 are quite nice shooters, so don't take my hesitancy wrong.

Perhaps the thread title should have been something to the effect of compare and contrast 6 mm, 6.5mm, and 7mm in a deer hunting rifle. I currently have three very capable elk rifles, as I consider the .308, .30-06 , to be. In my view I have one predator rifle and three elk rifles, though all can be pressed into service for deer. If I did not have three elk rifles the .308 would be very high on my list.

I'm not trying to be arguementitive, and that is how this is starting to sound I suppose.

If you don't reload, the 308 has less expensive rounds, especially military rounds for practice, plinking.  Some people even pull the bullets on military ball ammo and reload with their own hunting bullets.  I like the Browning BLR 308 better than my bolt 308.  It is faster, easier to unload with the detachable magazine, flat for easier carry and is just as accurate at 100 yards as a bolt gun, and it comes with iron sights, if you need backups.  It is also a very light carrier.  It also comes in 358.  I know it came in 243 once.  Don't know if it comes in 260 R, 7mm08, or 338 Federal yet, but probably does/will.  You can pick up a good used all steel one at a fairly good cost.

Well Quiver, if you want an absolutely superb deer round, that is perfect "as is" with 140 grain factory ammo, and that you will never need to reload, then go with the 7mm-08.  It's that simple.

Blr shortaction in 257 Roberts or 7mm-08 or even harder to find 284, would fill some empty slots, as would a long action 270 or 7mag.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

Then down load the 300 WSM to 308 levels and really like the rifle.  180 grain bullet at 2600 to 2700 FPS would be perfect for any deer just load, verify load speeds and resight in the scope and off you go.

I'm actually shopping for a bolt gun, and it'll almost certainly be in 270 or 308.

On 30-30... how many here regularly take shots that are outside 30-30's abilities? Properly setup & practiced with - maybe w/improved trigger, workman scope - it's what, 200 yard rifle? A little more? I've never shot anything past about 120 yards or so.

It would depend on what your own criteria for a 200 yd rifle would be. A 30-30 with either 150 or 170 gr bullets gets to the 300 yd mark with more fpe , with a bullet with better sectional density , than anything a person can sanely shoot from a 44 magnum revolver at the muzzle.
It's a matter of a rifleman knowing the trajectory of his cartridge and possessing the ability to utilize it.
Todays hunters are spoiled rotten compared to even 50 years ago and beyond, there's a reason the 30wcf has never been without a production gun since 1895.

While the 270 looks impressive on paper the 308 would be a better choice.
Some loading books show a 165 grain bullet faster than the 30-06 loading of the same bullet.
The smaller lighter bullets from the 270 like a 130 grain silver tip will make Jelly out of a deer at 150 yeards.
The 165 or 180 grain bullets out of the 308 makes a nice neat hole.

I know Swampy doesn't like anything but Remi's.  However, I do not like Brownings bolt guns.  I do like their lever guns, especially the older BLR's with steel receivers.
