Hogs and Lights
« on: January 11, 2013, 05:35:47 PM »
I have red and green LED lights that I would like to try over a feeder. Has anyone found that hogs are sensitive to red or green lights? The lumen output is low, I would guess around 30, 40 at absolute most.

I drove the truck to the furthest end of my property to pick up a sow I shot right before dark. On the way, 2 more hogs came TOWARD the truck with its high beam headlights on.  They were neither "disturbed" nor "intimidated" by the truck or its headlights.  In fact, I shot the larger of the two at 15 FEET in front of the truck in the headlights.  If you are hunting where the incidence of artificial light is a "natural" occurrence, such as within a 1/2 mile of the highway, the hogs have seen headlights, white light, and probably much more (lightning) that makes me believe green and/or red light should give them NO PAUSE.

We've used an old 200,00CP Q Beam since the 70's and it's never bothered a hog in Texas. We have all of the lens but have never used one on anything. I usually run the light and when I see something I drop the light where the light bouncing off of the ground allows you to still see the animal. When the shooter is ready, I raise the light so the animal is fully lite for the scoped rifle. Works on hogs, coyotes, badgers, etc.

Hey Denny

I just put up an Elusive Wildlife Technologies Kill Light (http://www.elusivewildlife.com/products.htm?section=22&p=productsList&iCategory=12) on the bottom of my feeder a month or so ago.  It has 24 green LED's and the hogs do not pay any attention to it at all.  It has a day/night sensor built in, but I just bought a motion sensor (http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/switches/intelligent-pir-motion-sensor-switch/969/) to put on it so that I can run both the light and the feeder off of my solar powered feeder battery.  I haven't hooked it up yet but it it looks prety straight forward.  I'll let you know how it works.

I have some Texas boar leds, red green and red. 12 volt and they burn all night with a feeder battery.  They make shooting hogs with a regular rifle scope at 80 to 100 yards at night fairly easy. check em out at Texas boars.
