First of all hello to all. Yes I am new to this board. I found it yesterday. I have been a handgun hunter for 15+ years and a hunter for 30+ years. Here is my quandary. I was about to purchase a RB in 480 until I reviewed this board. Now I am not sure if I want a Taurus. I am considering a Ruger. Having said that I have found a used 454 Ruger for 500 dollars. As all know I can shoot 45 LC thru the 454. My issue with the 454 is recoil vs power compared to the 480. I would like to request opinions from the expertise on this board on the above. Thank you.

Hello Bernie, and welcome to Graybeard Outdoors

In my opinion the Raging Bull series doesnt suffer from the quality issues that plauge the other taurus lines. Having said that I would not advise you to purchase one unless you can handle it and go over it carefully.
As to the caliber choice, I would go with the 454, it is superior to the 480 in everything, with the exception of an insignifigant diameter disadvantage.
I personally dont find the recoil of the 454 to be over punishing, others do. I routinely shoot my 454's in quick double action with no problems. The ruger would most likely be a fine gun, but if you like a nice clean crisp trigger you will definately need to get a trigger job on the ruger.

Thank you for the advise. I think I will pursue the 454. Why not, I never found my 44 to be a recoil problem. I know the 454 will be more recoil but I have never been recoil sensitive. Also I handled the 7.5" and 9.5" Ruger Super Blackhawk today. I liked how the 9.5" hung in my hand more than the 7.5". I believe I will purchase a 9.5" SBH before the next full moon rises. I am not sure about the added FPS the extra 2 inches in a relelively short barrel will achive. The added sight plane alone will be worth the added 3 ozs. I guestimate the added FPS must be greater than 100 FPS. Has anyone used a crono to varify the diff. ?

I have to agree. So far the quality issues with Taurus do not seem to apply to the RBs. Some few complaints have been voiced but not a lot. Mostly they seem to be good. But as suggested look it over good.

As to recoil it is very subjective and each person views it much differently. To me the recoil of the SRH in .44 Mag is as much as that of the full house .454 Loads in an RB. Other shooters I know seem to agree but not all. I also find no noticeable difference in recoil between my identical RBs in .454 and .480. If someone handed them to me blindfolded to shoot there is no way I'd be able to tell you which I fired.

I agree with the comments from above--with one exception. 480 loaded with 400 gr bullets is a big step up from normal 454 loads. It does it effortlessly without the severe stinging recoil. If you want a heavy hitter with manageable recoil go with the 480. That being said--I own both in Taurus RB and wouldn't trade either of them for anything else currently on the market--especially a Ruger SRH! If you like to shoot a lot--go with the 454. Its very accurate and fun to shoot with 45Colt.
