remington 788 6mm

Traded my savage axis . 223 for a remington 788 in 6mm.  I've been reloading my dads 6mm shells so I already had the stuff for this one.  The 100 grain hornady interlocks with IMR4064 shoots great in this rifle.                   FBC

Just had mine out for a test run with Alliant RL-19.  Tried it with the 80gr Speer Hot Core (a deer bullet) @ 3361fps.  The 95gr Nosler
Ballistic Tips did 3149fps, and the 100gr HDY Spire points did 3004fps.  The Nosler 95gr BT's were the most accurate, followed by the
HDY 100 grainers.  The Noslers went into 6/16" 3 shot group and the HDY's went into a 1/2" 3 shot group.  The Speer's went into 1" for
a 3 shot group.  Had not shot it in several years and forgot just how mild and sweet it is (and accurate too).  I took off the 6x24x50 scope
and put a lighter 3x9x32 on it.

I would definately try some different bullets.There are a lot better performing bullets out there.The Sierra Game Kings work and shoot well.

I really like the 788 the bolt locks up tight as ft. knox, I guesss thats what makes them shoot as good as they do.    the savage axis is a ok rifle but I'm likeing the remingtons much more.                          FBC

I recently snagged one at a pawn shop for $225 in 22-250 and love it. you got LUCKY with the 6mm. They're RARE

Bought my 6mm new in the summer of 1980.  85 grain Gamekings at a conservative 3150 fps drop into sub half inch groups all day, any day.  Still looks brand new, and has a place of honor in my safe.

My first bolt action rifle was a rem classic in 6mm i bought used back in the 70s. that gun has accounted for a truckload of deer. It was used by me and about every member of my family at camp at one time or another. It was at one time given to my dad and then he gave it to one of my nephews and now its back home. Its been one of the most consisntantly accurate bolt guns ive owned. The 24s arent my favorites but that gun will allways have a special place in my safe.

I'm really liking the 6mm, its a great rifle.  I shot a nice buck and a coyote with it last month.   This is one I will keep and reload for my lifetime ,  will try the 85 grain sierra bullets next .             FBC

I use those 85 grain sierras in my 788 243. Load them on top of 43 grains of IMR 4350 and they run around 3050 thru the chrony. At 100yds it shoots four shot groups that can be covered with a dime. I will never part with this rifle. Between me and my dad we have owned a few thru the years and sold or traded them off. I finally came across the one I have now a few years ago at a good price and snagged it up. I have owned and still own a few 700s and m77s that shot good but never one that consistantly shot groups like the 788. They may not be fancy but they are shooters. My goal is to eventually own one in every caliber they were chambered for. Some say they are ugly but to me I like them and there is nothing ugly about the way they shoot!

I own a 788 in 308. Had to trade in 2 guns to get it. It is my go to gun when I go hunting. It is the most accurate gun I own, on par with my Swedish Mauser in 6.5.  Yesterday at the range I put 3 shots into one hole in the bullseye. Through my binos I could not tell where the holes were. When I went to retrieve the target lo and behold, one ragged hole where the bullseye should be ! No wonder I couldn't see it through the binos. The bullet holes were on top of the black bullseye !
I need some help, Gents.  My friend jammed a magazine into the well the wrong way and broke off the magazine latch. Any idea where I can get a replacement ?
I'd hate for this darling of mine to become a single shot permanently.
Is replacing the latch an easy DIY job, or do you think I need to go to a gunsmith ?

I wasn't sure from your post if your magazine was broke or the bar on the rifle that the mag slides up on was it ??Numrich gun part corporation has a lot of parts for the 788 and ebay is another place to check. I think it should be no problem fixing it your self  if you find the part you need.

It is the magazine bar or rail that the magazine slides into. This is one of Remington's shortcomings. It means when U insert a magazine you have to align the slot in the magazine back precisely with the rail, otherwise you cannot insert it, or if you jam it in the bar will break off.
I found the parts at Numrich and it should be coming in this week.

Fabulous rifles.  I have 788's in both 44 mag and 6mm. I also got my 6mm on a good trade and will never part with it.  As you already know, the round is fantastic.  I have lots of rifles and these are among the most accurate.  You did well.
