Sold My AR and Bought a Remington 700 Tactical in 223 Cal.
« on: January 15, 2013, 03:59:47 PM »
I decided to cash in on the panic, pay some bills, and buy a rifle that I had heard a lot about. I bought the Remington 700 Tactical in 223, as I am into, and have been for years loading and messin with the 223.
I set the rifle up this afternoon with Leupold mounts, and a 3.5 to 10 Vari-x III Leupold scope. I mounted a Harris bi pod, and am read to shoot it in, as soon as the weather clears. Snow today, and maybe tomorrow.
I have built some really great shootin rifles over the years, but this one is more along the line of a 2506 Sendero I built up about 10 years ago, only lighter. A little over 7 lbs, I think, before the scope, and bipod.  I'm lookin forward to finding out what is gonna make this one go. I'll most likely use it for coyotes, hogs, and whitetails.
Anyone already found the combination on these little rifles?

I just got one used a couple of weeks ago.  I believe it is a 2012.  The barrel is stamped with a G which either means its a 2012 or a 1986.  It does not have the xmark pro trigger but the factory trigger has been set to about 1.5 to 2 pounds.  Its a beautiful rifle with a HS Precision stock and a 20 inch bull barrel.  I have only shot cheap 55 gr pmc bullets out of it and it was extremely accurate.  I have been trying to find out what the rate of twist is as well as exactly which model it is.  I am thinking the rate of twist is 1:9 but not sure.  I don't know if its the police model, tactical model, or varmint model.

I took mine back as it came factory with a broken extractor. He replaced it with another, and this one has a G at the front of the Serial #, so it should be a 2012. I had mounted the scope on the other one, and it came into zero in 4 shots. Hope this one does.

 Hay Dee
My  SPS Tac in 223 shoots fair whth 55gr. Hornady V-Max and Varget.
This Load is safe in my gun , start low and work up.

Load is 26.5/7gr. Varget 55gr. V-Max Win brass CCI SR Primers, the
Load varies with lot to lot of Varget powder.
COL 2.277/2.280.
The COL @ 2.280 is only 0.006 off the lands in my gun, YMMV.
This is 5 ,3 shot groups.
 Avg is  0.619 @ 100Yds.

Wasn't too crazy about this adjustable trigger as I liked the old 700 triggers better than the customs that fit the 700. I finally figured out what this trigger needed, made the adjustments, and now I have a good trigger. That should help the groups to tighten up some more.

I've loaded up for several the last couple years it seems.... most all have liked 748 and Varget the best for most up to 60 grs.  Benchmark has worked out the best of what I've tried for the 64 and 65 gr  Win-PPs and Sierra Game Kings respectively.  Don't remember now that I'm writing but if you have a 20" barrel, with rare exception they're all 1:9 twist.  The varmints are all 26" and 1:12 and only the long range tactical barrel was 26 and 1:9

Somebody was telling me the other day that the new 700's aint as good as your daddys 700.

I only have one 700 and its 40 years old in 6mm. It is a tack driver. Good luck with your new purchase . If I had an AR  ::)  I'd prolly keep it out of meaness at this point. But cashing in is not out of the realm of possibility.  ;)

Oldshooter, this 700 shoots as good as any I have owned in the last 45 years, and better than some. I'm shooting my own reloads usin once fired military brass, and it is a solid 300 yard gun. As far as the AR, I'm an old man that is long since past runnin down alleys, jumpin over fences, and the like. I will sit on the front porch and let the fight come to me. My 2nd Amendment rights are not about AR15s.

Dee for 52 gr sierra matchkings the best one I have written down for a sps is:
25.9 gr H335 in win stamped millitary brass. CCI small rifle primer. 2.26" OAL. Neck sized only.
5-5 shots averaged .42". Best was .33".

For win 748 all other components the same in sps. 26.2 gr. Gave an average of .47 with a best of .38. Not to shabby.

This rifle is a 20" 1-9. Most likely the bore was lapped and trigger adjusted. I haven't shot it in quite a while.

I did something similar.  I had a Kel-Tech in .223 that I put up for sale.  When it sold (along with two other rifles) I spotted a Border Patrol Commemorative Set (Winchester 94 in .30-30 and Smith and Wesson 19 in .357) that came home with me with the proceeds.  That was not my original intention as I was going to purchase a Weatherby Vanguard S2 but...they were out of stock for awhile and the collection was at a price I could not resist.  The rifle is in perfect condition and never shot.  The revolver has been shot a few times but still pristine.  I had a bunch of .223 ammo, listed it, but no takers.  So I ordered an Axis in .223.  Can't let that ammo go to waste!
