Key West
« on: February 22, 2013, 05:03:57 AM »
I took the wife on vacation in the Keys.  Well, she flew, but I drove my truck so I could take all my fishing stuff.  I'd never been before, so researched all the best places to wade and flyfish.  It turns out I was there at the wrong time of year for successful flyfishing, so after trying for a few days, I switched to a casting rig (like we use here on the lakes) and live shrimp.  Wow, did I ever catch fish.  Trout, pompano and grouper.  All day every day, just by wading out on the flats and fishing on the bottom.
Those places the Net said were the best places were not.  The best places are the state parks.  $6 to get in for the day, nice beaches and unending flats.
Can't go this year until probably May due to medical treatments, but this time I'm taking a #8 Orvis rod and a sinking line.  I believe if I could get a shrimp imitation or a saltwater streamer on or near the bottom, I could hook up with those same kind of big keepers size fish.
I've always heard where the Keys are for bone fishing on the flats, a 2 person adventure where one person poles the boat and the other one fishes.  Maybe that's so, but if you ever get a chance to go, it beats the heck out of the surf fishing on the Outer Banks.
Anyone here ever been?
