Winchester Primers
« on: February 03, 2013, 01:53:50 AM »
Has anyone had any problems with Winchester primers in their AR-15's?  Only primers I could find for small rifle.  Any slam fires?  I usually use CCI primers.

Read somewhere where someone did.  Think he didn't clean it good.  Thanks, I got 1,000 of the Winchesters anyway.

slam fires  no.  have had trouble with piercing them in three different rifles though. had a bad lot and Winchester would do nothing about it. I no longer use wsr primers for my 223 loads.

Were they AR's or bolt guns that had the trouble piercing?  Read that you have to keep pressures under 40,000 for the WSR primers.  So, I am going to load them on the minimum side for target practice with fmj's.

Howdy. According to Rick Zediker and Derrick Martin ("Accuracy Speaks" inc.) use only WSR/Rem 7 1/2 primers and WW or LC cases in full throttle 5.56 AR-15 match loads. I have and they are right. FC cases are heavy and soft and RP's are nearly the same. You do not want to punch primers in an AR as it will eventually wreck the trigger and burn the end of the firing pin. I am a firm proponent and use them in my Bushy-Olympic Arms target gun., a Rem BDL and a Savage w/a Sharpshooter Supply 1x8 twist w/top book loads and have never had a problem. When I find FC/PMC ect range brass I put them in the recycle bucket. If you are having problems piercing first check your loads and components and then look at the end of the firing pin for roughness ect. As to slam fires I don't think it is physically possible in an AR that is in good operating condition. A tip- If you don't like the "twang" when the rifle fires and the bolt cycles, pull out the recoil spring in the butt stock and grease the HELL out of it (any grease will do)-Muddy

I've used Winchester primers and Winchester brass in .223 in the past with perfect success in full power 62 and 69 grain loads used in AR-15 rifles fired in law enforcement advanced weapons training when I was involved in that sort of thing.  I've got 7,000 of them and if I had an AR, or any .223/5.56 rifle to use them in, I would do so with no concern over suitability or reliability in the AR platform.

im no accuracy or match expert with the ars but i know for a fact ive loaded and shot well over a 100k of rounds in ars and probably 2 or 3 times that much and have never had a primer related or even a single problem with rem or fed 223 cases. As a matter of fact if i was going to stear away from once fired cases at the range it would be lake city. I find MANY of the with primer pockets so loose id be afraid to refire them and it agravates me to find that out after swaging the pocket sizing and trimming and champering that brass just to throw it with a wasted primer in the junk bucket. Ive had fed and rem and ww and pmc brass all go more the 5 firings with full power loads and to be honest see very little differnce between brands for longevity. If you insist on shooting to the edge of safe pressures about any brass can fail. Load sensibly and it will all hold up fine.

the rifles were 2 AR's and 1 Encore rifle.  the loads were starting book loads for plinking.  as stated it was a bad lot.  have never had trouble with any other brand and I've loaded and shot thousands of rounds.  not saying they are not good primers. just saying I had bad luck with them.
