CCI 40gr Game Points (CCI 0022) are best in mine.

I have a Marlin 982VS and it likes the Remington 33 GR Accutip-V best. Of course they are $20.00 a box and scarce as hen's teeth. Of course it is not a Savage, but I was very disappointed with it's accuracy until I found it likes a clean barrel. So the point of this post is try your gun dirty and try it clean so you will know what it likes best. BTW - those Remington accu-tips will make 1 ragged hole at 50 yards. I am now very happy with it, since finding out it likes a clean barrel.

My 93 shoots best dirty. Real tempting to pull a bore snake through but that messes it up. Glad it wasn't a very expensive gun.

Federal full metal jacketed from Walmart. I don't clean mine unless it starts shooting bigger groups.

My model 93 heavy barrel likes CCI TMJs the best, they do well in the Savage Striker as well.

Hornady Critical Defense and CCI Maxi-Mag HP's are the best for vermin hunting in mine.  The 50gr pills shoot the best groups and are what I throw out at 300 yards to bust clays.  Heck of a trajectory though.  If I could just get the Dynapoints to group worth a darn ....

well I guess you guys can tell me but is the 22 mag just not that accurate or am I looking for to much from a rimfire. this is a model 93g with the wood stock. I have tried the cci 40 g jhp. the 30 grain hornady and the win 40 jhp x ammo. the win shoots the best but still 2-3 100 yard groups. I thought maybe the scope but changed that and the same. I know the 17 hmr does much better than that. I would have got another 17 but wont the extra punch of the 22 mag for yotes. Should I expect more? has about 150 rounds down the barrel do you think it will get better with more? I here reports of guys saying there guns didn't get good till after about a couple 100 rounds.  any help would be great. It isn't a bull barrel so wondering if that is also an issue.

Make sure the barrel is free floated.  Get a piece of threaded tube (lamp thread post material is what I use) and make pillars for it.  If you have a torque wrench, play with the torque settings on the screws.  Some at RimfireCentral have found it alone can make a profound difference.  If floating the barrel doesn't help, try a piece of inner tube placed between the barrel and stock for a pressure point at various locations.

Here is a picture of what I did to my plastic stock to free float it.  It shoots .75"-1.5" @ 100 yards with most being around 1.25".

well I called savage yesterday and asked what should be expected from the gun as far as accuracy. the women told me that it should do 1 1/2 100 yard 3 shot group. Mine does not with the 3 ammo selections so far. I now found some 34 grain Winchester and some 30 grain cci max mag hollow points. that would make 5 different kinds if no good. I asked if they recommended a specific ammo for my 93g model like they do for the 220 slug gun. She put me on hold and said that all there 22 mags should meet there accuracy requirements with the 50 grain federal ammo. If so that would be ok with me as I got this gun to use primarily for areas that are rimfire only and I cant use my 22 hornet and shots would be 100 yards max. Now the biggest problem I have search all over the internet and no one has 50 grain ammo in stock nor do any of the local gun shops. if anyone knows of a on-line place that has them please let me know. Has any of you guys tries that ammo in a savage or on fox or yotes?

The only 50gr I know of is TMJ.  Try CCI Critical Defense (it is 46gr) if you can find it.  I have used it on groundhogs with good success, but my furthest shot with that load was 80 yds.  I'm sure it would do well on fox.  Win Dynapoints are also 46gr and may shoot well.  I would love a 50-60gr HP for more penetration.

as mentioned i hope when i can find them that they do shoot good. the extra weight and energy at 100 yards will be perfect for what i need. my next best option at this point is the win x 40 jhp which was about 2 1/2 groups at 100. if the 50 grainers dont work savage will be getting a gun delivered back to them.

I'll have to try those JHP's.  My Savage shoots the 46gr well, but those TMJ 50s do shoot the tightest groups.  On paper the 40gr have the most energy etc., but I'm betting the 50s work wonders.  Thanks for the info PowPow.  The hunt is on.

The Winchester and Fed versions of the ballistic tip seem to shoot best in mine, but it also likes the Winchester Dynapoints.

I like shooting the cci maxi mags , they group real well in both hollw or solid point. The winchester hollwpoints didnt feed or group well .

well i went to the range yesterday with 2 more ammo types. one being the 30 cci max mat +v 30 hp and the 34 winchester ev hollow point. I can say that this model 93g wood stock has a thin barrel and it heats up quick which was surprising to me for a rimfire. after say 3 3 shot strings it was already pretty warm and it was about 70 degrees on cloudy. that said i shot some of the 40 grain cci and 40 grain win hp first as i had them and again they shot ok but probobly 3 inch 3 shot groups. I shot the new comers and the 30 grain shot 1 inch 3 shot on 3 different strings. the 34 did about 1 3/4 inches and again this barrel was warm already. So my last ammo to try will be the 50 grain federal that savage recommends for this gun but will be surprised if it shoots well since the 40 grainers did not but stranger things have happened. seems to me this gun likes light and fast so far. the problem is I bought this gun as a 100 yard coyote/fox gun in my rimfire only area. I was at cabelas after the range and they had the same savage with stainless bull barrel and synthetic which i hate. I was thinking maybee the bull barrel model would help and i could switch the stocks on the two guns and might just have to sand the wood channel a bit wider for the bull barrel. Have any of you guys experienced the savage only shooting the light fast bullets? I like savage guns and own several but i might have to switch If it cant work with the heavier bullets. My buddy was with me and he just bought a used marlin model 782 tube fed old bolt action 22 mag. he sights in at 50 then puts a target out at 100 where i am and shoots 2 different 40 grain 3 round string in a dime size. I told him that gun would probobly shoot as reviews say all the old ones do and that is what you should buy. Then i though my gun only has 100 rounds through it and i saw some reviews where guys said it takes 500 for the 22 mag to settle in.

I think I have about 500 through mine, just trying different brands. It seems to shoot better as we go. Also, if I run a bore snake through it, I have to start all over. So I don't clean it unless its going to sit up for a while.

intresting about the cleaning. I have been running a snake down it every 10 shots or so. Figured break the barrel in and maybee smooth it out first. then foul it up. I am going to shoot all the ammo i got and keep about 9 rounds of each. After that it will have about 300 rounds in it. then i will shoot it all again in 3 strings and see what is best and that is what i will stick with. want the 40 as a minimum but looking at the 34 grain winchester which shot pretty good out to 100 yards the energy is the same so if need be that is what i will shoot. I have yet to get any fiocch, remington or armscor ammo so will need to try that also. might be surprised that the cheap stuff flies better.

You might want to stop cleaning it and keep shooting it. My experience with rimfires is that you can keep shooting them, only cleaning when accuracy drops off. After cleaning it may/will take some more rounds downrange to bring accuracy back.
