Disabled veteran must prove his citizenship to renew license  Published February 08, 2013

  •    Jerry Sullivan, a Vietnam War veteran, says he is being blocked from renewing his Texas driver's license because his citizenship is unknown. (MyFoxDFW.com)
A disabled Vietnam War veteran has been blocked from renewing his Texas driver's license because officials say he lacks the necessary paperwork to prove his citizenship.
MyFoxDFW.com reports that Duncanville resident Jerry Sullivan was unable to renew his license because the state's Department of Public Safety told him his citizenship "was unknown."

"They told me I have to have a passport or birth certificate to prove I'm an American citizen when served. I enlisted at 17 and I'm 57," Sullivan told the station.
Sullivan attempted to provide proof of citizenship by presenting his expired license, his Social Security number and a military and Veterans Affairs ID cards, but was unsuccessful.
Sullivan, who is living on a limited income, will have to pay $60 to get a birth certificate from Missouri, where he was born, according to MyFoxDFW.com.
A spokesman for the Department of Public Safety tells the station that all driver's license applicants must present either a birth certificate or passport, or have record of one on file.

Actually that is mostly the case everywhere.  My daughter needed to cash a check but couldn't because she had/has no drivers license; couldn't get any ID because she needed a birth certificate and couldn't get a birth certificate without an ID.  Good thing I could fax my DL to Alaska to order a BC for her or she would have been up a creek.

I'm 57, I was 17 when I graduated high school in 73.  My buddy had joined the Marines the year before when he graduated at 17.  I only got a draft card and was never put in the draft.  My friend was never sent to VN although he was combat ready in 73.  How could this guy be a disabled VN veteran.

It's possible but unlikely this guy was a viet vet.  Saigon fell in 1975 if I remember right.

To the point of the post.....In Ga. they have started requiring proof of citizenship and residency as well.  This is to control illegals in our state, so even though it's a little more trouble..I'll go along.

I see that we ended our military involvement in Aug. of 73.  He may and I mean may have been involved in your deployment of VN.  He would have have to graduated say May of 73 like me......go thru boot camp and be assigned to bring us out of VN.  I doubt it.

My son was born in this state. He moved to Louisiana and traded in his NM drivers license. He became quite tired of Louisiana after a few years and moved back here. When he applied for a NM license they wouldn't accept his Louisiana license and told him he needed to bring his birth certificate as proof he was a citizen. He took in the original and they wouldn't accept that. He needed to also bring a relative to vouch for him. He took his mother and that wasn't good enough either. After presenting an employment record and a w-2 form (or whatever it's called now) he finally received a driver's license. It has the EXACT SAME number as his original license did. One of his cousins had the same experience after returning after living in Colorado for several years but at a town 200 miles from here.

This is in a state that gives drive's licenses to illegals with no problem. During the son's difficulies I witnessed a person that spoke no english come in with an interrupter, fill out a form, and be presented with a license.  ::)

By the way, my son just had his 52nt birthday. He's a disabled vet and never saw combat although he was serving during Desert Storm. He was held back because he was on some type of special assignment during that time. He was injured during a training exercise after returning to the states. The army is a tough duty and it's easy to get busted up.

Slightly off-topic, but watched a documentary last night on Netflix streaming that was really good..."Sky Soldier" about a helicopter pilot who served 2 tours in Nam
