Privi Partizen .284 140 gr. BT
« on: December 29, 2012, 12:46:48 AM »
My wife and I each have Superlight Handi Rifles in 7mm-08.  Both rifles shoot the Hornady 115 gr. BTHP like a laser.  I decided I wanted a heavier hunting bullet so I tried the Privi because it was inexpensive and we shoot a lot.  I loaded them over Varget for 2800+ fps. and am getting Minute of Garbage Can at 200 yards.  Can anyone suggest a better load.

In your part of the globe you ought to be able to get Bulk Rem or WW bullets.

Cant comment on your particular bullet / load per say, but I have shot a lot of Privi in factory loaded 308 win.  The basic ball ammo will do 1 1/2 to 2 inches in most my rifles, and the Match stuff will shoot under an inch in the rifles that are capable of such accuracy.  Bad bullets are certainly a possibility, but I would try the usual tricks (seating depth, powder charge, etc.) before I wrote them off.  Is it possible the Handy has a particularly slow twist that is not suitable for the longer 140 grain boat tail?  I wouldn't think so, as that is a standard bullet weight in 7mm/08.

The twist is 1 in ten, so I don't think that is a factor.  Up until now, I've had pretty good luck with Privi components.  And yes, it's my belief that Remington designed the 7mm-08 around the 140 gr. bullet.  I guess I'll work on the other variables. I have other powders I can try.  H4895, IMR3031, CFE223, IMR4895, RL17, etc.

Correct !
It was the first and I believe the only load available when the cartridge came out. I'm thinking it was not even a CorLokt bullet.

Pete,

Weigh the bullets!  My 7mm privys varied a lot.  Seem to get better groups when I checked and separated them.

Thanks Bobby.  I'll do that.  We used to weigh and sort round balls when we were heavy into traditional MLs.  I hadn't thought about it.

How much weight deviation do you consider acceptable?

I think they varied about 2 grs.  They were cheap enough on sale.

That should not affect the accuracy in a bullet weighing 140 gr. Now if it was a 22 cal 45 or50 gr bullet I'd have a different opinion

In a 140 gr bullet a difference of 4 to 5 gr is IMO sloppy quality control. I've got commercial cast bullets in .458 that do not vary that much.

BBF,

Checked a few..........got a 1 gr variance on the 5-6 I checked and everywhere in between.  Could be a little more if I was to check more of them.  Now my experience says it did make a difference whether or not it should.

I'll be check'em ;)

Would it have made a difference in your hunting situation if you did not sort them?

I had a batch of bulk .30 call ball bullets once that varied 10 grains between the lightest and heaviest. Ive had differnt batches of ball bullets that sprayed no matter what i did. I guess you have to keep in mind that some bulk bullets made oversees are made to spray out of full autos and they dont much care about wasting alot of time designing a bullet to fly right or the quality control to make sure there consistant. Id do like dbf suggested and save a bit longer and buy a box of bulk ww powerpoints or rem corelocks. Or if you want to shoot ball buy some hornadys. Problem is there not a whole lot cheaper then there soft points.

Pete,

You can get blemished bullets 139 grain at Mid-south Shooters Supply at about $76 to $90 for 500.  They are a seasonal item, and usually appear for sale around May October (I ordered them in Oct)  of each year.  You have to order them quick because the more popular caliber bullets sell out quick.  The description was: "7mm .284 Dia 139 Grain Big Game PolyTip Moly Coated 500 CT"

I would be willing to swear they were the Hornady SST's, with the addition of the moly coating.  Can't beat the price.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Thanks for the info.  I've seen blemished bullets from time to time, but was afraid to try them.  I'm not really looking for cheap bullets.  My .243 Superlight Handi shoots the 85 gr. Sierra Gameking sub-MOA at 300 yards.  I want to do the same with a 140 out of the 7mm-08.  I'm going to try the 140 gr. .284 Gameking and some other powders and see what I can do.
