454 CASULL NIGHTMARE!!!
« on: March 04, 2004, 12:51:57 PM »
HELLO AND GOOD DAY TO ALL. I HAVE A ENCORE IN 454 AND AM HAVING PROBLEMS KEEPING THE SCOPE ON!  I HAVE A REDFIELD 3 RING SCOPE MOUNT AND A TC 2-7 PWR RECOIL PROOF SCOPE.  I HAVE HAD SEVERAL PROBLEMS KEEPING THE SCOPE STILL. THE LAST PROBLEM WAS THREE OF THE FOUR SCREWS SNAPPED OFF THE MOUNT.  THE LOAD I WAS SHOOTING WAS 260 GR. SPEER, AND 36 GR. OF H110. THE RECOIL IS STIFF, BUT THE SPEER MANUAL SAYS THE MAX IS 37 GR. THERE ARE NO OTHER SIGNS OF TOO MUCH PRESSURE.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE SCREWS WERE FAULTY(I GOT THEM FROM A FRIEND). THE LENGTH WAS RIGHT AND THEY WERE TIGHT.

IS THIS TOO MUCH FOR THE TC??

Dave - take a deep breath.  The caps make it look like you are screaming.
I would say that if the screws broke than they weren't the original screws that came with the mount.  Replace them with hardened socket head cap screws.  That said, I am surprised that this would happen on a three ring mount.  My scope started moving on my Casull, but I was using the factory supplied rings (just 2) that come with the SRH.  I torqued them down until I was afraid something was going to give and left it there.  No problem since.   Since then I have learned about a wonderful thing called Lapping.  A $30 kit from Midway will allow you to lap your scope rings and increase the ring to scope contact area.  http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/227261
I am kicking myself for not buying one of these before.  Not sure what a gunsmith charges to lap scope rings, but I would be willing to bet that they would pay for themselves the second time you mounted a scope (if not the first).  Do this, then apply some resin to all the rings and you will have a mount that won't let go.
If your load was at or below max it should not have been a problem for your TC.
Doin' my best to keep up with Maryland's one handgun a month law.

If all else fails you could try a little dab of loc-tite (or my poor mans loctite, clear nail polish,) on the ring itself where the scope and the ring are mated together.  BUT BE WARNED, do this ONLY IF you have no plans on changeing the ring configuration or such very often.  Again, LAST RESORT.

Once you get the issue with the mounting screws solved I would be interested in hearing how that 2x7 scope holds up?  Recoil proof remains to be proven im my mind.  That is why I went fixed power with my 500 S&W.
Some people come into our lives and quickly go.  Some stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts.  And we are never.  Ever the same.   Authur unknown.  In memory of my son Jonathan.

Dangerous Dave....

Just like anything else, screws can be defective......and that's what I suspect in your case.

Screws are heat treated to improve their hardness, but in doing so, they are more brittle. I had a Williams reciever sight that had over-hardened screws supplied. They both broke on installation!

Replace them all.
