357 Maximum Bandwagon
« on: February 15, 2013, 06:25:31 AM »
I'm onboard the 357 Max Bandwagon! Good Lord willing, I will pick up my new 357 Handi this afternoon. I have a friend with a reamer. He has killed many, many  whitetails and wild hogs with his 357max Handi. My question now is where can I find some 357 max brass? I'm on the notify list at Midway, Mid-South and Natchez....so far none to be had. Anyone know of a secret stash somewhere?

Remington is the sole supplier of 357 Maximum brass. They make a run of brass and then shut down and set up another case. When there are enough sales orders (I do not know the trigger point) they put a run in line on their equipment. They will not set up and make another run until there are enough demand for it. I do not know how many they make in a run. We are in between runs. As soon as there is enough orders accumulated, they will make another run. You have done the right thing by putting in an order to help drive demand. Be patient, eventually there will be another run sooner or later.

I got lucky and put a order in a couple years ago right before they ran a batch.
I wish I'd of bought more, but what I have will probably last me for years anyway.
The real bummer right now is they're doing all they can to meet the demand of popular rounds.
357 Max might get put on the back burner for a while.

OK, I'll be using 357 mag & 38spl brass until I can lay into some max brass. What bullet type are yall getting the best accuracy in the 357max Handi? I want to hunt with a lead cast bullet with wide meplat like this one... Will the Handi stabilize a 185gr boolit?

I shoot 180 in mine but it's jacketed, and it does pretty good.

Congrats on the new iron! I was lucky enough to find a ton of max supplies in a box of stuff I had acquired a while back.
I hate when i miss. But when I do, I can always come up with a reason why.

Hello and welcome!!

The 357 will stabulize 200+ weights YES! Thats a good looking and I am sure good preforming bullet if cast properly.

My favorite Bullet is the Hornady 180 SSP and favorite powder is AA1680.

TONS of posts with recipes and powder choices, look to the FAQ's for a easier search.

I stocked up on everything last Fall, brass, bullets, primers and powder, so I'm good for quite a while.  Our two Handi maxis seem to do very well with the 180 gr, Hornady SSP, so we'll be sticking with that for now.  The Savage 24 is something I'm gonna have to play with.

I spoke to Kurt Bellm at Bellm TCs this morning.  He is out of brass and does not think any more will be produced by Remington for the rest of the year.
I got lucky and found 200 pieces at a local reloader supply today.  The price was 15.99 per hundred, to show how old this brass was.  I should have my Handi MAX back from David White in a couple of weeks.
My problem is that I can't find ANY 180 gr. bullet molds.  I have some 180 cast that I bought from Mastercast.com.  I won't be happy until I can start casting my own bullets.

RCBS has a nice 175gr mold I keep looking at for the Maxi.  Little pricey though.

Sorry, and the 357-180-SILH I think.

This is one of the strange moments where a wildcat may be better than a factory load. I have an eye out for a 357 barrel reasonable priced to make a 357 Herrett, there is no shortage of 30/30 brass. You cant use 38/ 357 brass though. A 35 rem would e OK, but I like my rims ;) 8)

Well if you would consider going up from the 357 Maxi to the 35 Rem but want a rimmed round you could always go up to the 356 Winchester.

Got a feeling there might be a lot of Handi Rifles in the 35 Whelen and 45-70 on the lightly used market here in MS if pending legislation passes.
HB 1139 will allow for use of weapon of choice on certain private lands, which will encompass much of the state.
It is rolling along and may well pass which will likely mean a lot of Handis will get left in the cabinet or taken to the pawn shops.

Thanks for the replies. I got the 357 Handi and have a few comments. First, the fit and finish of this Handi is noticably better than the older ones I have. I didn't measure the trigger pull, but it is crisp, no complaints there. After cleaning  the barrel with Hoppes #9, I mounted a Simmons 4x (I will need taller rings to mount the Bushnell 3x9). I test-fired with some 158gr SWC's in magnum brass. The first 3 shot group at 50 yds was .625". Accuracy was much better than I expected, especially with the SWC crap zappers that I had loaded for plinking in a revolver. Will lengthining the chamber to 357 Max degrade my accurcy with 357 Magnum brass? I plan to fire a lot more rounds in 357 Mag than in 357 Max.

For most members that have used the GBO Maxi reamers(about 150 or so) the shorter rounds shoot as good if not better after the rechamber due to the improved leade cut into the rifling by the reamer, but not necessarily with the same loads as before the rechamber.
