I want a convertable
« on: February 20, 2013, 06:27:34 AM »
Perhaps this has been covered before. If so, I apologise.

I have a F.A. 83 in .454. What a NICE piece of equipment and I love the thing! I know that F.A. has 'kits' with a frame and 4 cylinders. Well, I WANT extra cylinders for mine. I want a .45 Colt cylinder AND a .45 ACP cylinder.

Can I send my gun back to F.A. and have them fitted to it? If so, can somebody give me an estimate (wild or ball park is fine) of the cost for each of the 2 cylinders? Likewise an estimated time line.

Thanks.

Looks like the current price for extra cylinders is $405ea.  You will have to ship the gun to Freedom arms, which will add round trip shipping of at least $100 (maybe more if you don't have a friendly FFL dealer.

Go to "Guns" tab and scroll down to Option/Price Sheet for Existing Guns
(looks like that is a direct link).

The extra cylinders certainly make the gun more versatile - especially in the situation where ammo or reloading supplies are inconsistent.  It's worth noting that you are significantly changing ballistics when you change cylinders and the sight settings will need to be changed to make them useful in the field.  Surprisingly, even the windage can change significantly with different powered loads.  You can probably handle the windage issue with some creative reloading but I recommend that you get at least the next taller sight blade when you order your cylinders.  The sight blades are easy to change with a small allen wrench and will keep you from having to make drastic changes in your rear sight height.

When I had my .45ACP cylinder made (didn't bother with .45 Colt) the turn around time was around 2-3 weeks if I recall. Pretty fast really, I also had an action job performed and an over travel screw installed on the trigger at the same time.
