Yeah, I know, this is the rifle forum, but........if anybody here really wants to know if he/she can 'take' a heavy recoil caliber rechamber/stub, etc. of a Handi, consider this.
I just pulled out my 727 Ol' Ugly Overkill, the slug shooting 12ga. 'Topper based' thumper. I made up some slug loads, shot them, and got this thought (mind you, my slug loads dont even equal factory 2 3/4" Foster slugs). And Im no lightweight, I go 6'1" and about 210#. Oh, and out of a smoothbore like mine the recoil is less than a rifled slug gun.
Take a Topper weight 12 and shoot 2-3 boxes of factory slugs (10-15 shots) in one session out of it and tell us what ya think. I recommend ya do it offhand, but hey, if ya wanta bench it, go ahead, just remember I recommended offhand (and a recoil pad).

Previous discussion on a similar topic, 2oz turkey loads in a light shotgun are lots of fun too, a few shots even from a standing bipod were painful when patterning, but I never felt the recoil at all when shooting a tom.  ???

Ifn ya cheat n use da tirty two tweny, it doan hurt atall. ;)

Man, I do wish I was in a turkey rifle state.  I miss that.

Never noticed a problem prolly cuz I only shoot one at a time.  ;)

Considering all of this, why in the H would you want a 3 1/2 inch chambered 24" 12 ga. barrel for a handi? Turkey loads in 3" in a mossberg 500 kick somethin fierce. Seems a lighter gun would only make that worse, and then go to 3 1/2s? Who shoots these? Masochists? Oh, and don't forget to choke it down to XXX full! all for a grass eatin under weight bird thats hard to pluck? I'm still tryin to get a turkey here, but don't think i'm goin to set up a handi for it.

My current turkey gun is a 20ga TDC, 1½ oz  3" loads work just fine, girly recoil and all, ya know!  ;D

We fire 20-30 rounds each of 3 1/2" 12 gauge... 2 1/4 oz loads patterning for turkeys every spring... we notice it, but don't find it overly ojectionable... as Tim says you never notice it shooting a tom... unless you "short sight" and give yourself a third eyebrow (BTDT).

I have the following;
12 ga Ultra LIGHT Slug Hunter
box of 1 & 11/16 oz (approx 740 grains) fullbore, .732" hard cast slugs
several cans of blue dot powder
lots of primers and 3" hulls.
 
I'll get back to you on the recoil.   ;D

I have a 338 WM bolt gun and a 45-70 lever gun. No contest, 12 gauge slug loads recoil much harder. 000 Buckshot has rather brisk recoil as well.
If you make the mistake of putting your firing hand thumb across the wrist of the stock, your thumb punches you in the nose like Mohammed Ali.

I put a cheapo red dot on a mossberg 500. firing turkey loads bent the bolt that goes through the scope rail! My friend has the 40mm red dot on his and cracked the lense. 1 7-8 oz 3" shells kick damn hard. i imagine 3 12" would be even more. I do not want to try any of these in a pardner with the plastic butt plate! no thank you.
