Multiple barrel fit
« on: February 18, 2004, 12:52:58 AM »
My original barrel on my 209 X 50 fits so well the frame doesn't hardly leave a markon the barrel.  A slight tap and the pin drop starts moving out and it just "feels like they are made for each other."

My first new barrel is the 12 guage Hardwoods I just picked up last week.  It fits very snugly and I can see in two mountings (opened annd closed it 4-5 times) that it is already wearing marks into the coating used to make the camo barrel.

Putting the pin in requires several taps from a soft face hammer and when together, the whole rig is just really tight compared to the natural fit of the blackpowder barrel.

Here's my question:  do you guys with multiple barrels experience that they all fit differently or do you make your purchase based on fit?  In other words, do you take your frame to the store and try barrels until you find one that feels right or do you just take for granted that they all work if they go together.

I realize that precision for purposes of hitting the target is not as critical with the 12 guage.  I also realize that the extra coating on the barrel for the camo may just need to rub down a bit in the high spots to make it smooth up.  But the difference in the amount of effort it takes to install the pin between the two was what caught my attention first.

Thoughts?

Yep, what you describe is very common with both the Contender and Encore.  Manufacturing tolerances, nothing more.

Mike, As long as the bolt is engaging fully, the fit on the shotgun barrel really sounds better to me than the ML.  You want things to be pretty snug.  I have found much less difference in Encore barrels than Contender barrels.  Of course the span of time for manufacture of the Contender barrels is 6-7 times what the Encore is. I have 6 Encore barrels including a Muzzle loader,  and I see very little difference in the lock-up on them.

It normal in my opinion.  All my barrels get the rub marks real quick.  I have had some pins that came out a lot harder than others, but usually after changing the barrels a few times they loosen up and are about the same.
