wanting to upgrade!
« on: September 24, 2012, 07:12:32 PM »
I've got a bone stock crosman storm xt. I want to sell it before i get my new one.

Im lookin at the Beeman BW8M22NP I was thinkin this one because of the duel calibers. I have some pest that that need a little more @$$ behind the pellet the .22 would work for me.

Mind you my Storm XT have taken 2 coons 1 shot each 1 was 13 lbs the other was 17 lbs. I'd just prefer a 22 for pest like that but still want my 177 for squirrels and birds.

well.in all honesty, not a single person that i know, myself included, uses the swap barrel  feature of the beeman. i've tuned 7 of these guns for myself my son and some friends. every one of them has been more consistant and easier to shoot with the 22 caliber barrel. on mine and my son's , i epoxied the 22 barrel in and locked it down. you may want to keep that in mind before you sell your 177, and just buy a dedicated 22 breakbarrel model from beeman. they are a bit more solidly built than the switch barrels. you can find some great deals at pyramyd air.

Mine is the Beeman Sportsman RS2 swap barrel combo (not sure if its the same as yours?). I had fits getting any consistency out of it in .177 until I determined the Beeman badged scope that came with it had parallax issues (another friend determined his was junk and wrapped it around a pole). I put on a BSA airgun scope AR2-7x32 and it was suddenly a dandy. I havent even tried the .22 barrel.......hmmmmm. Its a real man-sized gun and takes a good bit of arm strength to cock that break-barrel; OK for some yard varmintin' but too much for long strings of target practice. Oh, I put that Beeman scope on a 22 RF and it works fine at longer distances than airgun.
Also, the pointed pellets have not been good groupers for me (two different brands) so I went back to RN or target WC's.
Until this one I had been using a side lever Chinese model with quite some satisfaction in the shooting, but butt ugly.

i tried a penetration test with my two pellet guns one a 177 caliber other 22 cal both shot into a soft 2x4 about 25 feet only about 1\16 difference in penetration went in around 3\4 of an inch the 177 went deeper the 177 1200 fps. 22 975 fps .also tried gamo alloy gold plated pellets no that impressed not worth the money to me not quite as accurate the more heavy the pellet less penetration.try them and see what your guns will do. ;)

Therein is the age old issue of high speed needle vs low speed brick, I guess. We need sufficient penetration to get to the vitals of the critter, if either will do so that is enough, but it is well accepted by game hunters that the calibers larger than .177 have more 'killing power'. If I were after small game I believe if the penetration were comparable that I would opt for more caliber (but my, do the pellets get pricey!).
Ive read (to paraphrase) that 'high velocity without accuracy is no where near as good as good accuracy at a slower speed'. The race for ever more velo has again captured the fancy of American airgunners, just as it has, for years, with powder-driven guns. Now that I know the .177 barrel works on my Beeman I should pop on the .22 and trial it. I just really hate to knock down a good shooting and -0-'ed setup! Now if I had bought two of them............. ::)
