45-70 to 45-120

I'm thinking of getting a BC barrel and rechambering it to a 45-120. Is that something I can do at home by hand?

I did mine by hand, very easy to do. Took about 45 minutes. Go for it.

I guess you're talking about some sort of depth gauge.   :-\   If so, I don't think so.  Just go very slowly when the portion of the reamer that cuts the rim recess starts to enter the original recess so you don't cut it to deep.
 
Matter of fact, the recess on the original 45-70 barrel was a little deep to begin with, but that problem was resolved when I trued the face of the barrel before recutting the chamber to 45-120.

as per stickies, paint the recess with whiteout.

when your reamer starts to cut the whiteout, it is time to stop.

Yes to the above. Do not cut the rim recess any deeper AT ALL. This is where way too many go astray. You are tired and maybe anxious to be done and it just happens SO fast.
I suggest that when the reamer gets to the top of the rim recess you remove it (as you should be doing often to clean chips anyway) and begin trial fitting of a cartridge with your longest bullet of choice. Go only a tad past that fit, unless you get near the bottom of the rim recess then use that as your stop point.

I have nothing to offer that hasn't been said... But I have often found it curious that many of the guys recommending that you stick with "Trapdoor" loads in your .45/70's are the same guys rechambering to .45/120... What up wit dat???
