Fair Price for Wheel weights??
« on: February 06, 2013, 11:34:19 AM »
What is the going rate for wheel weights?  I have thought about asking around a salvage yard or tire shop for them to hold me some but I do not know what if anything I should offer.

Is there a better way to get lead?

It is all about supply & demand, each region is different.  I get mine for free cause I know the owner, but if you aren't that fortunate you might offer $0.40/$0.50 per lb and see what he says.

In our area of central west Illinois, .50 would be pretty high due to low ratio of lead wheel weights. My son is a tech. and said the lead ones are quickly disappearing. At this stage, I would buy ingots if I had to before paying much and have to sort. ole shooter

I get them free from the store I buy tires from , you might try doing business with them and asking. Make sure they are all lead though as most are not these days .

If I have to buy them I usually pay $20 for a 5 gallon bucket of surprise metal... Some are car weights, some truck weights, some steel, some zinc, but enough castable weights to satisfy me...

The local metal recycler that I deal with charges 20 cents, per pound, over what he buys them for.  Yesterday it was .48 per, previously .45, so it fluctuates with the market.

Most of the shops I was getting them from really started getting a lot of steel and Zn weights in the bucket, about 35%. I have one shop where the guy sorts the lead into a 5 gal bucket for me. He has been charging me a 12 pac of Bud for a 5 gal bucket of his sorted weights.

Most of the shops around here will sell them to you for what the recycler pays. But I have a couple buddies who supply all my needs. I'm a lucky stiff....

The local scrap dealer told me .50-.60 lb.  He is holding them for me because I helped him get his foot in the door getting his yard set up in my community.
