Oh Yummmy
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:47:03 AM »
LOL, this is so Hillbilly ! It reminds me of that old T shirt people were wearing years ago where it
had the menu of the Road Kill Cafe written on it .
Splat of cat , Poodles and noodles , Toad ala road . There is no telling what might start showing up
in your burrito after this . I wonder if there will be health inspectors patrolling the roads now determining what is good and what isn't ? But you can always tell them. Hey it all taste like chicken.

What's wrong with that?  I know of a lot of people who have done just that if they hit a game animal during the hunting season.  Depending on where the animal was hit.  If it is skinned and cleaned immediately, only a shoulder or leg would or part of the animal would be wasted from being badly bruised.  The rest is eatable.  I know of one guy who got a 10 pointer that way.   Since is was during deer season, took the head and had it mounted.  Of course, bumpers and fenders are expensive.  Don't know of anyone who has salvaged a coon skin or a coyote skin though.

I think that should apply to all states.

We've got guys in my area who have everything but a band saw in their truck for butchering deer they find road killed. Very common to see rush jobs where they just take the tenderloins. I've seen guys stop and jump out of their cars and start butchering before the animal was dead.

I can't count the deer that I've hit or friends have which ended up going through the grinder. As long as they are fresh and not mangled, grind em. Also kinda fun to do autopsies to see what ended up being their demise, deer are tough animals.

WE've eaten several road killed deer. Yes there is waste, worst part is if they are broadsided, all the insides explode. I opened one up a few years ago and the smell ran us out of the shed. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

My Mom, who is a recovering hippy, vegetarian..and now a verified closet conservative(thanks obama!), hit a doe last november on her way home. She actually KEPT DRIVING(IDK) then decided to go back. She turned the now crippled car around and went back to the now deceased doe. She pulled over and was trying to decide what to do when a pickup truck pulled over and a good ole boy jumped out. He politely inquired as to her well being then ask if he could have the doe. Mom of course said "ok" and therefore released herself from having to gut and clean it herself on the side of the road. Just kidding. ;D.the fella loaded the doe up and took it home. Made mom feel good about the deer not being wasted and that became her ending statement on the story, "at least nothing was wasted" .  Also this happening provided me great ammunition at Christmas getting mom to talk about her "first deer" and I slid a deer hunting themed sticker into her stocking, was good for a laugh but I don't think she's gonna put it in her cars rear window...:)   in any event, good thing theres folks out there who don't mind roadkill, not only to cut down on waste but to also help out little old ladies who just happened to get their first deer.  J

Dead skunk in the middle of the road ? I ate some chocolate covered ants once , and these were
some big ants .  But they tasted like chocolate covered walnuts so they were not to bad.
But the deep fried monkey meat ?  No way.

They closed a Chinese restaurant in Montgomery a few years ago because someone found a piece of grissle in their "chicken soup".  They took it back to a lab they worked at and it was a cat ear grissle.  Beware of Chinese restaurants.  Makes you wonder about Mexican also.  They do eat dog and donkey meat.  I guess it doesn't matter as long as it is USDA inspected.

My family is on the road kill list from NH Fish and Game. Last year we got a 900 lb moose that had both left legs broken. Got the call, drove the tractor about half a mile. Shot the moose and did a  field dressing. Hauled it home to the game rack and 13 hrs later three of the family's freezers were full! We've taken numerous deer and bear over the years too.
One doe ,was so full of hemlock that the meat was green but the hide made three pairs of moccasins for the kids!

I knew a lady once that ate most road kill that she thought was fresher than a day old. She said that a hawk "tastes like chicken". She knew for sure. ear

I tuned into a repeat of doomsday preppers the other day and a guy dressed in buckskins was walking down the road with a woven basket picking up road kill to bring home to his family. Hey, his overhead is way down !  ::)

I've read stories about people feeding roadkill to their chickens as a source of protein during the depression. If any doubt exists about the freshness of the meat, I think eating it " once removed "  via poultry would be a good idea. I have no qualms about harvesting roadkill deer if I know they are fresh. I have neighbors that like to scrape up the nasty ones during the winter and bring them home to add to their coyote bait pile.

Off topic , did you guys know that a bird can ingest strychnine with no problems . But to us it can be
deadly ? Also ask yourself why no other creature will eat an avocado except us and some insects ?
Because it is a distant relative of deadly nightshade . We produce an enzime that makes it harmless
to us .
