Monster goldfish found in Lake Tahoe  By Tanya Lewis

  • Monster goldfish found in Lake Tahoe   Gigantic goldfish, like this one held by University of Nevada, Reno, researcher Christine Ngai, have been found in the waters of Lake Tahoe.Heather Segale
A new kind of lake monster has been found, in the depths of Lake Tahoe: gigantic goldfish. Researchers trawling the lake for invasive fish species scooped up a goldfish that was nearly 1.5 feet long and 4.2 pounds.
"During these surveys, we've found a nice corner where there's about 15 other goldfish," environmental scientist Sudeep Chandra of the University of Nevada, Reno, told LiveScience. "It's an indication that they were schooling and spawning." The arrival of the fish, which were probably dumped there by aquarium owners, has Chandra worried — goldfish are an invasive species that could interfere with Lake Tahoe's ecosystem.
It's unclear whether the giant fish were introduced as fully grown adults, or while they were still small, Chandra said. But even a small creature can have a big impact, if there are enough of them.

- Environmental scientist Sudeep Chandra of the University of Nevada, Reno
The goldfish are just one of several species of invasive warm-water fishes in Lake Tahoe. "The invasion is resulting in the consumption of native species," Chandra said. What's more, the invasive fish excrete nutrients that cause algal blooms, which threaten to muddy Tahoe's clear waters. [Photos: Giant Goldfish & Other Freaky Fish]
Fish out of water
Aquarium dumping has become a common practice in the United States and elsewhere, and it's taking a toll on native wildlife. A recent reporton California's aquarium trade found that fish owners and importers are introducing hardy, nonnative aquatic species to California waters. "Globally, the aquarium trade has contributed a third of the world's worst aquatic and invasive species," Williams, who was lead author of the report, told OurAmazingPlanet, a sister site of LiveScience, in January.
While the exact number of aquarium owners dumping fish is unknown, scientists know the practice is occurring because these species could not have ended up in these waters naturally. Between 20 percent and 69 percent of fish keepers surveyed in Texas admitted to dumping, according to Williams.

Other ways that invasive species find their way into natural ecosystems include aquaculture, live seafood, live bait, and fishing and recreation vessels. More than 11 million nonnative marine organisms representing at least 102 species arrive at ports in San Francisco and Los Angeles alone, Williams has found.
The invaders include tropical fish, seaweed and snails. One of the nastiest is a deadly type of seaweed known as Caulerpa. A type of algae that produces toxic compounds that kill off fish, Caulerpa was eradicated in 2000 (at great expense) from lagoons in Southern California.

Aquarium owners should be more careful when disposing of unwanted fish and other animals, Williams cautioned. "It's pretty simple: Don't dump your fish," she said. Instead, she suggests calling the pet shop that sold the fish or your state department of fish and wildlife. (Euthanasia is another option, but simply flushing fish down the toilet can be problematic — for the fish and for your plumbing.)

So why do people dump fish? Studies of dumping have shown that size and aggressiveness of the fish are two main factors, Williams said.
The largest pet goldfish, according to the BBC, was a fish named Goldie that was 15 inches long and weighed more than 2 pounds.

I remember going on a trip to Lake Ontario when I was about 5 or 6.  My Dad grew up in the area, just north of Rochester. We were standing on a bridge, with lake ontario's expanse stretching endlessly out in front of us as we cast with live worms for "rock bass". Behind us was an inlet of some kind that turned into a shallow marsh. I had my very first psychedelic experience right then in 1976 as a large golden/red glowing mass moved from deep water torward the bridge, eventually passing directly under us. The school was 4 or 5 feet wide maybe by about 10 feet long best I can remember. The individual fish all looked identical in size, so it seemed and HAD to be at least a foot or more long. I was amazed and always treasured that memory. Dad just spit on the school as it passed under and said "Goldfish".  A man of few words but he always took me fishing. Been goldfish around in our lakes for a long time I guess.  J

Naw they've just been dumped since the late 1800's in every body of water in the U.S.. either that or flushed down the toilet. Bass love em and lots of fisherman use to use them for live bait. They're hardy fish and start reproducing quick. I'm actually surprised there not more of them caught like common panfish. Bet they taste like a mud turtle. J

When I was a kid in ILL my Dad a friend and I were fishing in the little Wabash river. The friend caught a carp that was as gold as the fish in the pic. Scared the guy to death, he hollered to my Dad to come running. We took it to my Uncles pond where it stuck out like a sore thumb for years. Just guessing but I believe it was  about 5 lbs when caught. That was the only time I saw a gold carp. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Have their been sightings of really enormous house cats near Tahoe? Either that or normal sized, but really nervous house cats.

A carp by any other name is still a carp.

Actually they are rather tasty but a pain to clean.
Fantastic smoked.

What's the trick to cleaning them? I tried butchering a seven pounder and all I got was a bloody mess with almost no meat. I ended up burying it all in the garden. A shame to waste a fine fish, but we had giant rhubarb for a couple of years after that.

In my hunting and bowfishing career there are two misses that haunt me years later.  One was a few years back during a mild flood when I was standing in running water about knee deep shooting carp and buffalo as they swam by.  Out of no where a giant freaking goldfish showed up headed my way and I simply missed him.  What a great picture that would have been!  Makes me mad even now...

We weren't starving but we ate carp growing up. Pop wouldn't keep anything smaller tan 5 lb because of all the fine bones. They can also be canned like salmon, the bones are cooked too. Taste was good, just a lot of bones. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I think the carp sized goldfish are koi, a member of the carp family. When I was a kid we'd catch them by hand in the delaware canal. I always thought they were goldfish that had crossed with carp. Apparently that can be done by a breeder but doesn't happen in the wild.

The fish in the picture in the first post is not a koi. That's a goldfish. I have a koi pond in my backyard with fish bigger than that one, and that's not a koi.

As long as a gold fish is not restricted by it's environment's size, it will continue to grow.

It seems like I've seen pictures of a gold carp but never have run across one myself in the wild. I did have the absolute privledge as a kid to catch a fish i'd have described as a red carp perhaps. It was in a slough that ran off mcalpine creek in charlotte n.c. it was redish and had a funny mouth, was maybe 14" long. Even as a kid I was weird about the catch and release thing, so I slid the fish back into the water. Was 20 years after that when I came across that fish in an internet search of local native creek fish. Its called a carolina red horse and is a kind of native chub or sucker if I remember right. Its a rare fish now, possibly even extinct in the area i'd assume. Cool to have caught a fish the native americans here probably saw and caught in great numbers but is now known to only a few biologists. Glad I got to see one. J

The looong tedious job of scaling them.

It has been a long time since I caught or ate a carp and I intend to keep it that way, but if some one offered me a dressed one, I would not hesitate to take it.

As with catfish and bull heads, you MUST remove the sensory strip before you eat it.

Carp, Koi and Goldfish are all in the same family of fish, i.e. minnows.

Clear Lake in NorCal is infested with carp. They have carp derbies where the catch is several tons. It doesn't seem to reduce the population much.

I've been watching a show on the outdoor channel called "bottom feeders". I was surprised to learn that there are commercial fishermen working the lakes and rivers of Minnesota and Wisconsin for carp, buffalo, sheepshead and suckers. They pull in literally tons of fish per day, a good "haul" might be 30,000 pounds.

Those fish prices seem pretty cheap, like catfish steaks at $2.49 a pound, we pay over six bucks a pound in supermarkets in Colorado and that's shopping for sale prices.
