9pdrs at Fort Entrance
« on: March 20, 2013, 12:57:49 AM »

Both of these guns seem to be civil 9pdrs 8ft long of unknown but probably British manufacture produced in the late 18th or early 19th centuries.
This type of gun was produced in large numbers, often to arm merchant ships for protection against pirates and privateers well into the 19th Century.
These two guns were obtained from a site in Southwark which was being developed in 1986.
These are mounted on concrete carriages due to being outside of the Fort entrance.

I like the concret carriages.  They are well done for their exposed location.  thanks for sharing!

If they were painted, the concrete would be less obvious.

I think they are painted a light grey color... concrete would be darker.....
Rivercat, are you sure late 18th C? with low trunnions and as thin as they are they remind me of late 17 th early 18th C cannon....it appears they spent sometime in the ground as the moldings are not well defined... am I right?

I meant a colour more typical of gun carriages.

In answer to your questions, yes we believe we are correct with the dates for these two cannons.
And you are correct these have been in the ground for some time hence the wear and tear.
With regards to the colour of the carriages I admit these do look rather faded as they are painted and we are awaiting the new batch of paint to be delivered to be able to paint them up again. The paint colour has been researched based on what was originally used at the Fort and on the original guns and is as close a match as we can get. The same paint was also used at the Dockyard which the Fort was built to protect.
