In a moment of weakness I picked up a Handi in 3006

Synthetic stock version with no iron sights, just a scope rail. Looks unfired and with a $150 price tag I took the bait. I already reload for 3006 and have Handis in 223 and 17HMR so this is not exactly virgin territory for me.  However if anyone has suggestions on working up a groundhog/coyote load in this rifle/caliber combo I'd appreciate the input.

Good find and welcome to GBO! I would look to the 110gr v-max bullet for a decent 30-06 varmints bullet.

WELCOME JBEAR!!!!

I got my first hand '06 when a guy walked in our store with one that popped open every shot. He was discusted and wanted to hear NOTHING I had to say. He was shooting Hornady HEAVY magnum ammo and the gun looked like he stored it IN OIL....

I happily bought the Ultra COMP 30-06 !  Your $150 price is a GREAT price, enjoy it!!

 In my post-purchase rationalization I’ve decided that this rifle might serve as a >200 yd ‘yote rifle.  Back when the only CF rifle I owned was a Savage 110CL in 3006 my old ground hog load was 50.0 gns of 3031 under a 125gn PSP bullet. That rifle is long gone but I still have the dies, brass and some bullets. I also have some Varget that I use in the 223 that I’ll give a try. While I appreciate the 110gn suggestion for some reason my old rifle did better with bullets in the 125-130 range so I’ll probably start there.

You will not regret your purchase, especially at such a good price.  I think that is about what I paid for a new one in the early '90's!  ( now that sounds funny, don't seem so long ago). It was the first rifle I bought, and still my go to rifle.

Most of my coyote shooting has been while on stand deer hunting so used my deer loads for so I can't help you there but would be interested to see what works well for you.

I wouldn't call it weakness, I would say that you capitalized on an opportunity.  I would have too...Good for you.  I need a 30-06 to take up space next to my Ultra Varmint in 223 and it's 7-08 accessory barrel.

First let me say welcome!  I'm not a lawyer, but I think you can go to jail for stealing ::)   That was a great buy.  I wish I could find them like that.

With all respects to my friend Dinny, I think a heavier bullet would stabilize better.  Don't know for sure, I'm not an '06 expert.  You've already got your 200 yard rifles.  Think longer with the .30-06.  Sourdough here on the forum regularly kills wolves out to 600 yards with his Handi '06.  Perhaps he'll show up and give you some longer range load info.

I bought my first new handi back in 1996 and it was a 30-06. I think I gave $199.00. Ive still got it. my moments of weekness have always involved a woman not a rifle. Good luck with your new toy. Rick!

I suspect you will find that the longish throat of an '06 chamber really likes bullets that dont have to jump so far to get to the rifling. Dont use the magazine rifle COL for your reloads, but see what maybe using the 'caliber seating depth' to get the nose farther forward does for you.

Yeah  helluva  price!  I agree with Petemi on slightly heavier bullets when learning its 'personality,' then try lighter ones later.
 
I like 165's for all around, but 150's and 180's have their place was well as 200's (for elk!).
 
Never shot any 100's or 110's, but don't overlook the 125's and 130 grainers too.

I don't have an '06 yet (in a handi) but I'm looking forward to getting one, hopefully this year.  The '06 has the same 1 in 10 rifling that the 30-30 has and my 30-30 just loves 125 gr bullets!  I'm jealous, but have fun with your '06 and enjoy!  44 Man

Thanks for all the welcomes and suggestions.  With all the talk of high prices on "Black Rifles" in military calibers lately I was suprised to find one at a good price.  ;D

Lewis, I know the lighter bullets work in the .30-30, but I'm wondering if that holds true at 500 to 1000 feet faster in the '06 ???

I'm .30-06 ignorant.  I'm a .308 family dude, and as curious as the OP.

I've got two 30-cal flavored barrels.  30-30 and '06.  The 30-30 has Marlin-like 'micro-groove'-ish rifling.  The '06 has traditional, wider lands & grooves. They were both fitted by Brian56 last year.

I take a reduced load approach for my '06 loads and usually make 'em shoot like a 30-40 Krag.  The folks at Hornady list their 30-30 170gr RN to go no more than 2300fps.  With 40gr of H4895, it chronos right there. Easy on the shoulder; barrel & receiver. (not that the Handi can't handle full-up loads).  Should work great as a 'woods' load, although I used the 30-30 barrel for deer this year.  I switch to a bullet with a longer ogive for my P17, usually a Speer, as it doesn't like the RN out of the box magazine.

Good luck with the '06.  There are TONS of recipes out there (be careful of course), stick with verifiable sources.  You'll find bunches of 'pet' loads.
