What do you think, a bit over the top with decoration..?
« on: February 26, 2013, 11:11:19 AM »
I have been looking at this for some time. Its been on sale for a while, its priced at aprox 1800USD.
It has a brass barrel with a steel liner. I kind of like the carriage, but find the total package a bit overdecorated. It must certenly has been put a lot of work into this, and seeing the price from a Norwegian perspective, its a fair price.
the barrel is cast locally by the owner, or a friend of him..

What do you think about this object..?

Neros,
To be honest with you I'm not all that impressed with that barrel. It's a nice size and caliber, but its has ungraceful lines, and it seems thick/squat without much of a taper. The form of the muzzle swell and muzzle ring look like they were improvised by the maker, not modeled after a real cannon (I'd call it ugly). I personally would not put out that kind of money to own this rig.

Cannoneer.

I agree on the barrel, it looks strange in so many ways. Its kind of funny, putting so much work into the a barrel, and then it looks so
cartoonish.. One would allmost think that it was modelled after a real cannon, considering the workload of this cannon, but I have never seen anything like this before..

For the record, I am not considering buying. Im just curious to hear your oppinion..

I think the biggest problem is the muzzel swell looks unfinished.. no moldings... the barrel itself needs to be finished looks like it was sand cast and will take a lot of work to properly dress all thoses molded areas.... it's trying hard to be a 17th century style tube but it's too short the carraige isn't bad but all the bronze castings that don't belong would have to go.... I would call this art rather than replicating an actual period cannon....
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Looks like a big version of one of those thin pot metal trinkets you might find in a gift shop.

for the price the carriage is nice looking. I would remove the embellishment and chuck it up on my lathe and refinish the whole thing. It definitely took someone some hours to make this thing and they were probably disappointed in the end. :'(

Yes, I watched the two vids. This seller (Lucas) is also offering a smaller version of the barrel on a naval carriage. It appears like these are not one-offs, but a planned production run by the maker/seller.
