160 Grain Nosler Partitions in 270 Winchester
« on: February 28, 2013, 11:06:23 AM »
Looking to load up some 160Gr. Nosler Partition bullets for my 270 Winchester as a possible Elk load this fall.  Has anyone used this bullet in the 270 Win.?
I have a quantity of IMR 4350 powder and Federal GM215M Large Rifle Match primers and am just starting to put together test loads.
Any thoughts or recommendations will be most appreciated.

to each his own but i dont see what it will buy you that a 150 wont and the 150 will shoot a bit flatter at normal hunting ranges.

Remember it's where the first bullet goes out of a cold barrel that counts most.

I've used it allot...mostly on bears...it penetrates like crazy!  I use 56gr of RL-22.  I haven't used it for long range shooting just from bear stands in Maine and Canada.  It would not be a bad choice for elk.

Thanks for all your thoughts fellas.  The .270 will be a back up for a Rem. 700 in 30-06, in which, upon the outfitter's recommendation, I will be using 180gr bullets, probably either Nosler Partitions or Accubonds.  In choosing the160's for the .270 I was trying to get as close to the 180's as I could in the .270.  I expect a loss in trajectory but possibly better penetration with the 160's vs 150's or 140's.  Both rifles will be zeroed @ 200yds, based upon the outfitter's recommendation.   Thanks again for the replies.

RP...I have shot 150 gr. Partitions through a Win Model 70 Classic Featherweight for 2 decades into 100's of deer and pigs (mostly).  Never have I found one, through shoulders, necks, ribs, etc., each having passed through the animal and beyond.  Early reloads used IMR 4350 with the standard reloader regimes of accurizing but performance was patterning and not groups.  I switched to IMR 4831, never looked back, and achieved GROUPS with bullet holes that touch one another at 100 yards, then zero for 200.  Case weight, case length, neck thickness, bullet runout, powder charge, and a rock steady rest assist me in performing to my peak.

I found my rifle's "sweet spot" with the 150 gr. NP over IMR 4831 after many iterations with IMR 4350, Speer 100 gr. Spitzer, Speer 150 gr. Spitzer, Speer 150 gr. Grand Slams, 150 Nosler Ballistic Tips (leave ghastly exit wounds), and others (Hornady & Siera bullets).  I know the equipment is far more accurate than me.

A 160 gr. NP isn't significantly larger/more aerodynamic/greater BC than the 150 gr. NP.  Performance should be similar and the energy delivered within the animal by NP's is significant while entrance and exit hole are neither large nor gruesome regardless of the location of the shot.  I have experienced more DRT kills with NP's than all other bullets combined.  It is hoped that your results will be satisfactory and aid in an increase in your personal confidence.
