How has the first week been? Lets get some reports from the Northwoods.. Some of us have to live through your experiences this year..Keep us updated...Good Luck..

I had 4 hunters here this week.That is the max I take a week in here in southern Maine. 3 out of 4 shot nice bears. Dressed weights on the first night were 258 and 269 lbs.These bears would have been over 300 in October.Other bear was a decent bear that a bowhunter took.

Called my guide yesterday.They had 18 hunters,12 had taken bear by thur.

Not a good week. Had 3 hunters. They saw 9 bear, shot and missed two and other hunter never took a shot although he saw 3 bear. One bear was described as a big boar with a white V on chest. Hunter had bow and couldn't get in a shot. Wind today and rain yesterday didn't help. Oh well, better luck later.

spoke to my guide tonight( spruce mountain lodge and guide service).Last week they took 14 bears for 18 hunters.As of this wed nite they had taken an additional 8 bears.There were several missed and a few wounded and lost.I'm hoping the success continues into the week of the 15th when im up there chasin the hounds.

well,our guide took 14 bear the 1st week,9 the 2nd week,2 the third week and 3 thhis past week when i was there.I didnt see one,my buddy shot his st bear,this was one the dogs treed.The other two bears-both about 250 lbs,one treed and the other went into a makeshift cave-they shot it when i tried to come out.All together i saw 5 moose,4 bull,one cow.One bull was huge.Also saw snowshoe rabbit,pine martin,racoons,quill-pig,beaver to name a few...overall a good time but i think atleast with this guide,we should have booked the 1st or 2nd week.I also wasnt impressed with the dogs performance.WE ran and treed coons and quill-pigs as well as running a coyote...he needs better dogs.1st 3 days were too hot and dry for dogs to pick up scent.I sat 6 nites on 3 diff baits and didnt see a bear.I was present for my buddies kill and helped get that bear out of the cave/woods.

8 hunters / 4 bear
First week - three hunters - all saw bear - 2 missed
Second week - one hunter - harvested bear
Third week - 4 hunters - 3 bear - all but one saw bear

Weather turned very warm. Conditions difficult.

Not sure how the guide services did this year, but another guy who comes up from NC that we know pretty good brings his hounds up all during the hound season and they shot a 402 lb bear and the STATE RECORD sow bear this season...(He also owns the boar record...both with hounds)then we took our hounds out and mixed them up with his (they run awesome together) and took some nice bears this year

I wouldn't know the area, as I never hunt there.......There's enough records up here to be hunted, people just don't have the initiative to hunt it hard enough to find them...

We always take some nice bear in that downeast area.Its just hard to get bears that score well because of the long hibernation in Maine.Its hard to compare that to down south states where the bears almost dont hibernate at all.I thought the 420lber we got this year was going to weigh more than that at first.They sure look big when you are walking a hunter in for a 10 yard shot on a bayed up bear !!! This bear just didnt have much fat on him.You can see his picture at http://borderpond.com/2003_photos.htm The guy beside him is over 6ft tall and a pretty rugged guy.

I got back from deer hunting last Saturday, stayed at PB outfitters. I talked with Paul and he told me that they had taken 109 bear this season. :eek:

Hey border,
Sorry it took so long to reply. Hunting is really tough up in the northwestern alagash that we hunt. You probably know. Deer are at the bottom of the list when it comes to animal density in that part of the country. I rattled and grunted in a buck that had a doe with him, they were the only deer I saw. Shot him Thanksgiving morning, he was an active buck in rut. He had the right side of the antlers broken off near the base from a previous fight. As you probably already know, theres some monsters that stay in the huge swamps and come out only at night chasing the does and back to the swamps before day light. The deer that I took had 4 nice tines on one side, and weighed right at 150 lb. The largest deer taken at camp was 242lbs. big body but the rack was not that impressive, but none the less a very nice deer.

Desertyote, I know just what you mean about deer hunting Maine.It is as tough as deer hunting as you can find anywhere, in my book anyways !!
Congrats on your deer.You saw 2 deer and shot one.Thats a good week deer hunting in Maine. Its hard to explain to people that the deer hunting success rate in Maine is usually around 12 percent.Thats for the whole season too,not just for one week of hunting.there are some huge beautiful bucks here and thats what keeps people coming back.that and the fact that there arent a ton of people hunting in sight of you every day.
I do my deer guiding in the southern section of Maine.we have a better deer population here then where you were for sure,but its still hard hunting.
I had a hunter shoot a real nice buck here mid November.Shot it out of a treestand I had just set up the day before.He said he had been hunting one week a year all over Maine for the last 11 years and this was the first buck he had ever seen !!! How many deer were taken for how many hunters the week you were here this year ?? I averaged about one out of 4 this year and I was real happy with that. Will be lucky to do that every year I think.Again, congrats on your deer.Rattlin a buck in Maine is alot of work !!

Checked out your site! NICE site indeed. I see you have coyote and cat hunting. HMMMM :-D Predators...thats my favorite game to hunt. Been calling critters for 24 years now.

The camp had 22 hunters in that week and 3 deer were taken. Nothing very big to speak of, but all three had one side of their racks broken off at the base. Last year was better, we went up the third week but it was really crowded in camp. I think there were 38 hunters last year and 8 deer and 1 bear were taken. The smallest deer last year was a 6 pointer that weighed in at around 160 or 165 I believe, there were 6s 8s 9s and one nice 10 pointer taken that weighed in at 215 lbs.

So tell me, how much did that deer weigh... Sure is a nice looking deer :shock:

That deer weighed 149lbs Desertyote ! I guessed it at 185 in the woods.My buddy that was with me (another guide) said 192.We were floored when we saw the weight.It had an inside spread of just over 20inches,high tines, real nice racked buck for Maine.Usually that type deer is around 200lbs.
3 deer out of 22 hunters isnt bad for a week in Maine really.Man, they put a lot of hunters through that lodge huh? I guide full time and had 13 hunters in November.Thats about what I can guide personally.I actually go in the woods with the guys,put them in stands or still hunt with them alot.Its almost like just hunting myself and getting paid for it !! Course, dont make much money with low volume but have almost all repeat hunters so its more like fun with friends.
20 below zero today when I left the house and we were out looking for a bobcat to run !! It warmed up to 7 below but got cold again real fast this afternoon.

The group of us deer hunters here always seem to take a deer in Maine, maybe were just lucky, or maybe we run hounds so much we just know where the deer are

Border....I'm thinking I might get downstate for some of that hound hunting....Might I ask, how long was that chase on the hound video on your page?

Also, do you do coyote hunts around the same time you do hare hunts? I need to get down south and get some hunting in, and coyote/hare hunting just sounds sweet....

That chase was a couple hours I guess.They had it bayed up in an hour.The dogs walked it for about another hour or 2.They were starting to get real rough on the bear after a while.The bear finally treed.How did you like the guy talking?? Hes ayoung guy that juts started hunting with me last year.That was his first bear on the ground.Little wound up wasnt he? Thats me walking in front of him when the bear crossed the road.

Heres as they say"the rest of the story" for the day the video clip was taken.We had 6 dogs out off a hot strike in a raspberry patch.3 dogs,all littermates, were on the bayed up bear you see in the video.My other 3 dogs went out in a different direction.I was cursing them to no end after we saw this bear on the ground.I called them every back tracking profanity I could think of.After an hour of walking and baying the bear with the young guys,we decided to go look up my other 3 back tracking idiots.We left the 2 greenhorn kids walking with the dogs and the bear.Told them to try and leash them when they got a chance. LOL

We found my other 3 dogs about 5 miles away.We walked into them and I was still cursing them the whole way in till I saw another 300lber in their tree !!! Another case of me trying to be smarter than the dogs and the dogs winning.I got some real nice video of the dogs and bear and got out to the truck just in time for the other guys to call.They were treed and wanted to know what to do.They leashed everything up and we met them on the road.Days like that make up for a lot of the bad ones.
