788 non adjustable trigger
« on: February 19, 2004, 05:29:02 AM »
I have a 788 in 308 I have had for 25 yr. and the trigger pull seemed to be awfully heavy.  I considered an aftermarket trigger but it appeared I would be spending at least $100 to replace it.  A gunsmith said he had cut a coil or two off the spring to lighten the pull.  Well being a nuts and bolts type (no good with software) I decided to tear it up or fix it. I punched out the roll pin that goes thru the trigger and there was so much dried grease and gunk it was hard to pull out the trigger. the spring then dropped down without flying across the room like I figured it would.  By cleaning the housing I expect it lowered the pull by about two pounds but since I had the spring out I trimmed about a coil and a half off.  I used a belt sander to smooth the end flat after snipping off with pliers. I put the spring and trigger back in the housing and wow, ... I wished I had done that 25 years ago.  I don't have a trigger pull scale but just guessing it went from about 7 pounds to about three.   So if you have an exceptionally heavy trigger pull in your 788 it may be because it just needs cleaning.
