I'm back!
« on: September 03, 2012, 02:44:03 PM »
I've been away from the forum for a while, but I've also been on a 171 day road trip around the country.  Along the way, I stopped at several places that fit the purpose of this forum, so I thought some of you would be interested in seeing some pictures and reading about these places.  I've been keeping a blog during the trip, and unfortunately it is far from being fully updated, but I will post a few links to the posts I think would be of the most interest to members of this forum, though some of you may be interested in other places I've visited as well.  Feel free to ask about anything I haven't updated yet (I will be working diligently to get it done as soon as possible, but each of these posts can take up to 8 hours by the time I've typed up the description of the day and added all the pictures).  Thanks!

Unfortunately, no.  I went through Glacier National Park, but was heading through it from Canada, then south to Yellowstone, and I was trying to get to a friend's house by a certain date.  I also didn't realize just how close I was until I got to Bozeman.  Did the cannon shoot happen recently?  I was near there about 23 days ago.

Thanks for posting all those great photos, Gulfcoast, I remember baking my brains out in July of 2002 up on the north west bastion of Fort Pickens measuring that impressive 15" Rodman Gun and Carriage.  From opening until sunset, I was there answering tourist questions and taking numbers.  Glad to see that they have the road repaired after those hurricanes!  Mike and I could not get there in 2008 when we visited the Pensacola area.

I'm looking forward to reading more about your big adventure!

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

It's taken me a while to get done with my write up of my tour of Vicksburg National Military Park, but I thought some of you would be interested in it.  There are lots of pictures, and it's a very comprehensive tour, so beware if you have a slow internet connection.

Thanks for the effort that went into taking the photos, and then for posting them here. I appreciated the Vicksburg scenes.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

You're welcome.  By the way, when viewing the blog, if you only want to look at the pictures, you can click any picture and it will give you a larger version of it and allow you to cycle through just the images without the text.

Great pictures.  Gotta go there now.  Especially liked the Napoleon photo at the start.
