Found a Pardner 410 for $79, Worth it?(pic)
« on: March 04, 2013, 07:15:58 AM »
I know I could part it out but is this gun worth $79?  It has the classic forearm. Good shape. Barrel even clean inside. Also has a Topper jr. 410 that was real nice. Can anyone tell me the year? looks like 2000?
Thanks, Jer

I'd buy it for that.  410 is sort of rare.  How much for the other one?  Maybe you could make a deal for both?  Just wondering...

Looks like a Pardner to me, a 2000 Topper would be matte nickel. That price is the exact price I paid for my new 20ga NEF Pardner in 1991.  ;D  The 33rd(2012) Blue Book of Guns Values lists value as $40(60% condition) to $100(100%).

Worth it? if clean, you bet; they are only going up. Last week's gunshow had used H&R shotguns at $139 & up.......
Id have it if it had been here at that price!

Clean bore, mechanically sound, made in Gardner....Yes, worth the $79.00 asking price. It would be a good project gun, loaner gun, learner gun, lean by the kitchen door gun, etc. The Topper Jr. would have a 22" barrel....Install a Survivor stock-set and you've got a real handy walkabout .410...JMHO

What's the best way to clean the reciever and barrel up. Steel wool and oil? I sure hate to pass it up for that price. Needs are not a concern, right?
Thanks, Jer

Wipe on some penetrating oil and let it sit and soak for a day or so; a bunch of grunge and surface rust may just float off. Any that doesnt reapply the oil, let soak some more and lightly scrape with a brass scraper (a flattened out cartridge neck works well). Brass wont damage steel or bluing and will pull the scale. When a spot looks dry while scraping, add more oil.

For heavier rust I've used transmission fluid and the edge of a penny. That's a good price BTW.

Should be worth it.  The Pawn shops around north Louisiana usually price them at $89 any conditions and some of them are really scruffy.  As far as the rust clean up use penetrating oild and anything copper.  I've used steel wool when one was really bad or you could use a brass bore brush.  Use the last two with caution, it will take the finish off too.

You were right Tim, as you prob already knew that. I had the two mixed up.  Went ahead and picked it up today. Is that the normal stock for these?
Thanks, Jer

That's the standard forend for '87-early 2k H&R/NEFs, same as my '91 Pardner, I have a few rifles with them also, one is a factory 7x64 made in 2000.  ;)

Yup, the schnable forends are much preferred over the later style by many, I think that's one reason for the popularity of the 45 Colt Carbine, it's just too bad it was priced out of reason to keep in their lineup, I think if they offered it with the same style stock set uncheckered made of hardwood it might have sold better and still be offered.  :-\
