New member invited by Kabar2
« on: March 14, 2013, 04:35:57 AM »
Hi All,
I am a new member and thanks to Kabar2 for inviting me across.
Well a little about myself, Love of all things that go bang more so with Black powder although bigger the better.
I head up the restoration work at Fort Amherst in Chatham Kent England, It is really a full time job but we are all volunteers at the Fort  with a love of the place. It was built to protect the Royal Dockyard at Chatham.
We currently have around 130no cannon ranging from 3pdrs, 6pdrs both heavy and light, 9pdrs, 18pdrs, 24pdrs, 32pdrs and a 64pdr, we also have a number of mortars from memory about 5no but I might be wrong on that. The age range of these cannon dates from Elizbethan through to the 1800's .
We have a number of shells and cannon balls of which the earliest is Roman and made of stone.
As I am new to this forum I am not sure if this is posted in the correct part but bare with me. I hope to learn some more from you fellows the other side of the pond as at the end of the day we are all learning most of the time.
Will hope to post some stuff up soon.
Rivercat :)

Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

Hi Rivercat and welcome.

It's good to have someone else from England on the board.

I got quite a surprise when I saw that you work at Fort Amherst, as I work just down the road in the Universities.

We will have to meet up sometime so I can pick your brains.

Welcome Rivercat,

The description of where you work and the rough description of the cannon there is a teaser.  Is there a web site with pictures or virtual tours so we can take in the sights.

Welcome to the board, rivercat. Are you familiar with this French piece cast at Douay in 1815, do you know anything of its history?

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Hi Cannoner,
I do not know much about this one other than it is on loan from the Royal Artillary collection, this is an oldish photo as I have since made the base for it . I will try and get some pictures the weekend but it is part of the fort that is under restoration currently.

Hi Rotunda,
I am down there most saturdays but the best time to meet up I guess will be Easter Sunday and Monday as I will be down there firing the 25pdr field gun dated from 1941 which came out of the western dessert.
If it works out will give you a guided tour.
