11/111, model 11 or model 111?
« on: May 26, 2013, 06:06:46 PM »
Just got a Savage Hog Hunter 11/111 and am looking for some see through or quick detach scope mounts and keep seeing things for model 11 or model 111 but nothing for 11/111 which is what is listed on their website.  I am brand new to Savages.  I got it cause I wanted a rifle with iron sights and I plan to just use the scope for my hunting loads and the irons for my playing loads.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you compromise and use a red dot for both hunting and plinking? Personally I have found that the see through just puts the scope way too high to be practical IMHO. The removable rings work, but to get good ones, they are expensive. I have found that the one piece mounts works best for the Savage actions. They bridge the ejection port and let you put a ring over the port. Red dots are quick on target and work well in low light situations.

For plinking I will be using 11 grain plastic bullets and hunting 150 gr.  So the point of aim/ impact will be very different and I don't want to have to resight in my scope that much.  And I think I will need something more powerful to see out to antelope distances.  You make a good point about the see through rings being too high and that is one thing that I was wondering.  I'll just leave the scope on all hunting season and take it off during the off season.

My original question is it an 11 or 111 model?  Just trying to find regular scope mounts are confusing.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestions LaOtto222!

I believe Savage has always used 2 digit model numbers to identify the short action and 3 digit to identify the long action - as in model 10 or ll for .308 length actions and model 110 or 111 for .30/06 length actions.

I'm not familiar with the Hog Hunter - maybe it comes in 2 different action lengths?

Thanks spruce.  It comes chambered in .223, .308, or .338 win mag so maybe the 11 is the first two and the 111 is the .338.

quas:  re: the scope of your choice and the different points of impact of the hunting bullet and the practice load.  Get the scope of your choice and mount it to the rifle; sight it in for your hunting loads.  See what the point of impact is for your plinking loads in relation to that for your hunting loads; do not adjust your scope for the plinking loads, just take a different point of aim to bring your point of impact wot where you want it.

Here's a example for me:  I shoot a Winchester 94 AE in 444 Marlin.  My scope is adjusted to point of impact at 100m with heavy slugs (300 gn at about 2200'/sec.).  When I plink with cast 240s and pistol powder charges, my point of impact drops a good bit at 50 yds, which is what I plink at with that rifle.  It would drive me nutz adjusting the scope for that but I noticed that the point of impact at 50 yds showed on the scope at right around the junction of the fine cross-hair and the thicker post coming up from the bottom of the scope, so I use the apex of the thicker post as my cross-hair and thaat seems to work for me.

I have also used 7.65 Luger and a 7.62 Tokarev chamber adapters in my 30-06 with those 93 and 85 gn bullets impacrting in a much different place than my usual 180 gn hunting loads but at plinking/garden pest ranges I just use the apex of the thick bottom post of the scope as the aiming point and so far, mister wabbit has not gotten to the carrots.................hth.

??? The way Savage has that rifle listed on their home page can be confusing. I doubt you are going to be plinking with a 338 Win. Mag.? That is a 111(Long Action). I have never heard of a 150grn. 223 bullet, so I assume (danger) that your rifle is a 308 Win., which is a 11, which is a short action. The rifle pictured  on the Savage site appears to be a short action. Short actions (late model) have action screw spacing of 4.400 inches. Long actions all have action screw spacing of 5 plus inches. In order to get proper scope mounts, you need to know if you have a long or short action?  Good Luck-Good Shooting, and I hope this helps.    Jim  :)
